New version of the forum for mobile devices.
« on: April 19, 2013, 01:21:55 pm »
I have installed a new forum theme for use with mobile devices phones/tablets:
http://smf-media.com/
If you use a mobile device the forum will now auto-detect and use this new mobile optimised theme, which should make the forum much more usable on the move.
You can always opt out and use the old site (or Tapatalk).
Let me know what you think.

I like it.  :-+ I don't think the forum was much of a pain on a phone before, but it is definitely nice.
No longer active here - try the IRC channel if you just can't be without me :)

works good on all my tested devices (xoom, sony xperia u, htc one x, htc one, droid 4) but not on my nokia n900, probably just a useragent issue on that though.

Not sure how configurable that system is, but would it be possible to put the "Show unread posts since last visit." and "Show new replies to your posts." options as buttons on the front mobile front page?

Just fyi, I have these two links added in my bookmark created manually, both work in mobile mode.

I'd like that too, but I have no idea if that's possible. This is just the stock install.

Same question for me, how to get back to the mobile version?

General it looks good, thanks
On the mobile site it was not possible to change text size / Zoom (if I'm not mistaken)
I would prefer to have an easy 'choice page' first like the www.formula1.com website

Scroll to bottom of the forum, you will see something look like this :

SMF 2.0.4 | SMF © 2013, Simple Machines
SMFAds for Free Forums
XHTML RSS Mobile WAP2

just click the "Mobile".  ;)

I looked at the options and can't find anything, they are just the same options for every theme.

If you go to https://www.eevblog.com/forum/index.php?action=unread while in the mobile view it works. Or go to that url and use the mobile link Bravo pointed out.

Now we just need a shadow box add on for picture viewing.

At the bottom of the Mobile page, there is a nice big button "Go to the full site".  That is great.

However, it took me some time to get back to the mobile site again on my mobile phone. I was stuck with the full site forum. I finally found that by clicking on the very tiny word "mobile" at the very bottom of the page, you could get back to the mobile web pages. I do not know any other way.

Perhaps a big button "Go to mobile site" on the full site page could be added to make it more obvious?

I was going to complain that the "Unread Posts" was going to the first page of the thread instead of the last when you click on the thread name, but then I realized that when you click on the arrow after the thread name, you go to the recent post. So I am happy with that.

Overall, it looks very good.

For your convenience, these below few links might be useful when maneuvering at the forum in limited Mobile mode, at links below, add them to your bookmark manually each, and they're ready to be used through your browser's bookmark, all links work flawlessly in mobile mode at my ipad.
Hope this helps.

I like the fact that it shows the date and time of the first post, can we have that on the full version too?

I like the look of the new theme, makes it way easier to read the forums without flipping my phone on it's side. One thing I dislike, though, is the browsing experience. You absolutely must use the top webpage back button to go back, because if you don't, when the thing opens the next topic, it spins a little delay icon and kicks you back to your previous page. Very irritating.

Sorry to necropost but this suggestion needs consideration or at least make the text at the bottom of the page against the background actually readable.

I changed to desktop view on one of my tablets and have spent the last two days trying different search terms to work out how to change back to the mobile version. Thank God I came across this thread or I would have never seen the reference to mobile at the bottom of the page.

Very nice - I like it.  :)

You can get to Unread Posts, PM's, Updated Topics, Recent Posts and others by using the navigation button at the top right.

I can't find any option to use the new Thanks function though (you do have Reply, Report to moderator, Quote).

You also can't see country of poster - not important, I just find it interesting to see the different flags (increasing my flag knowledge :)) and how widespread this forum is used around the world!

Is this why the https://www.eevblog.com/forum/ link now gives a 502-Bad Gateway error?  That link used to work, but now it requires https://www.eevblog.com/forum/index.php.
