Title: The EEVblog Electronics Resource Wiki is BACK!
Post by: EEVblog on November 03, 2011, 01:11:05 am
As the title says:
http://eevblog.com/wiki (http://eevblog.com/wiki)

The previous one unfortunately got killed with spam, and lack of enthusiasm on my part to fix it, but I don't intend for that to happen again!
I want it to be a big repository of links to all aspects of electronics.
All those useful lists that have popped up on the forum can now be put on the wiki.

Any comments and suggestions etc invited, as well as content of course!

Dave.

Dave (and others),

I recently received a copy of Art of Electronics. Before, when I had been reading it from the library, and on PDF, I had wished there was some place, any place that had answers and explanations to the exercises in the book.

My question is two fold:

1) does such a place already exist?

2) if not, I would like to spend time building answers and explanations to the exercises. I feel this could be a useful resource for those reading the book. I do not pretend to know everything so, of course, I would need help from the forum members to understand sone things myself. Obviously, I have no reservations for the content I produce to be edited and improved by others. I thought that the new(ish) wiki could be a good place for this, rather than one long forum thread. If you concur, could there be a section on the wiki for answers and explanations to the exercises?

Joshua

Hi Dave,

Maybe it would be nice to make a wiki with paths to datasheets of the manufacturer.
Not the type you get from google, sites with advertisers and no datasheets.

Hi Dave,

Maybe it would be nice to make a wiki with paths to datasheets of the manufacturer.

I already have a category for "Component Parametric Search Tables" that will take you directly to various parametric searches.
Direct links to datasheet are pointless given the millions of devices available. Others link Digikey/Mouser/Farnell do that nicely already.

I just unloaded all my bookmarks into the Wiki. I've rearranged the distributor page to be by category first then country which seems more sensible as many companies operate worldwide.

That's brilliant - thanks Mike!

And thanks Dave for doing the Wiki.

Awesome, thanks Mike!

We need to keep a vigilant eye on the Wiki, the number of spam attack attempts is just phenomenal!

How about requiring registration? Implement a better form of CAPTCHA if the current is not effective?

Any reason for not allowing registration? At least that gives people the option of not publishing their IP address for everyone to see. Wikipedia actually uses that as an incentive to register. It would also make it possible to correlate wiki contributions with forum names, eg. we could see what Mike contributed without him having to post about it on the forum. The best solution would probably be a shared account database for both the forum and the wiki, but that may require too much work to set up.

How about putting resources on the wiki in other languages than English? Mark it somehow, put in a separate section/space or you think there should be only English sites?

I think it should be English only.
Given that I can only read English, I don't necessarily like the idea of there being information on my site that I can't readily check myself.
And then you have the situation of having information in one language and not duplicated in another language, and it gets messy and people complain. I think it's unrealistic to expect to maintain multiple language version in sync.
Sorry to all those non-native English speakers out there.

Dave.

CAPTCHA

I would appreciate if this captcha thing was not used. It's more annoying than anything.

Unfortunately the Wiki has to be protected with a simple math question, it's the only way to keep out the spammers.
Otherwise it would be ruined in a matter of days.

The math one is fine! I just hate this picture thing where you have to guess what the letters are since they're so distorted.

Yeah, I hate those, which is why I don't use it.

Actually you have to enter correctly the "clean" word. The distorted image is for statistical analysis of the image. E.g. you see the image with "test" distorted. If the majority of people enter the word "test" then the computers can associate such a distorted image with the word "test". All those collected data helps the digitization of many old books.

I would suggest requiring registration to edit (with a captcha / math problem required for registration).  In my experience on small wiki's that dramatically cuts down on the vandalism.  It also is easier to revert when a spambot makes it through and defaces the whole site.  If you don't want to add the extra barrier to entry for contribution I understand completely, but if policing it becomes to onerous that might be an acceptable solution.

This could be a really great resource which I would like to contribute to.  I fully understand your comments about spam.  I do run my own electronics development tools website and of course, I would like to promote it.  We too suffer from Spam on our blog.  I would be happy to impartially post items of general interest based on my knowledge and experience in the electronics industry.

Regarding the wiki, how about vetting potential editors and monitoring their work?  That would prevent a free for all.

I don't speak Polish, though mom does, and was born in Radom. Do speak 2 languages though, and can make a German wince whilst butchering his tongue.

I am a new user here at eevblog and don't know much about the eevgame :). I am writing this post for Joshua who was interested in "Art of Electronics" manual.

Here is the link

Plus please check out the website: www.freebookspot.com (http://www.freebookspot.com)  . There are tons of engineering books there. After gigapedia gone, these guys are still hanging and doing good job.

I don't really think that simple math captcha is enough anymore. Today's edits of the main wiki page don't seem to be done by a human… 6/7 of them have recent records in the StopForumSpam database so it could be useful to display the more annoying captcha (say reCaptcha) only to users marked by Extension:StopForumSpam (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:StopForumSpam) or Extension:Check Spambots (https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Check_Spambots).
