Beaglebone Black Wireless released
« on: September 27, 2016, 04:06:43 am »
As the name implies, this is pretty much the same thing as a BBQ, but with WiFi and Bluetooth and no Ethernet:

The price seems to depend on location and supplier, and could change as no supplier has stock yet, but seems to be  somewhere between USD 68 and 99.

The source files (CC-BY licensed) are available at https://github.com/beagleboard/beaglebone-black-wireless

I'm a fan of the BBB (well documented, buyable chip is the most important factor here), but I still find it in the more expensive side.

Thanks for the post!
The TI CPUs have usually been "open source" friendly with no binary blobs I believe (except maybe those for GPU), what about the Wireless part of this SiP?

I just checked the schematics and found it uses a TI part (no surprises here):

http://www.ti.com/product/WL1835MOD

It has a 46-page datasheet, but this datasheet does not describe protocols or anything. Digging a bit deeper, I reached a wiki with information about Linux Drivers and SDK for several processors [1] and this integration guide for generic chips running Linux.

Looking at the stack, and googling for wl18xx, sifting through some guides, I found the blob: http://git.ti.com/wilink8-wlan/wl18xx_fw/trees/master

So, there you go. There's lot of support, drivers, and build instructions. However, there is a firmware blob with no source code available.  :-\
