Dave, you were right, I am now giving YouTube a serious chance

A few months back this happened:

Making compelling videos is quite difficult. It may take many dozens before you settle on a style and a coherent mission that attracts an audience.

That's one thing I never really did, think about how my video would be structured and then stick with it. It's always been an eclectic mess.

I like it, it's been great seeing the channel evolve as you became more experienced with video production. I have been tempted to start some education videos on server management, perhaps some software dev, etc. The few videos I did post that were demoing LookingGlass gained a ton of attention and over 100 subs, which was completely unexpected.

That's how it starts!

And then this:

I have been tempted to start some education videos on server management, perhaps some software dev, etc. The few videos I did post that were demoing LookingGlass gained a ton of attention and over 100 subs, which was completely unexpected.

I will definitely subscribe for server mangement, remote hosting ect. type content.

Ever since then I have had one person or another poke me and ask when I am going to start making some real content, well that time is now and my first real video was posted this morning. Before you judge, please note this is the first time I have attempted to actually create content like this, my primary focus was on good audio quality and introducing myself properly. I already have a 2nd video ready to go live later this afternoon that covers some of the details in brief of a rather unique VM setup that I use for my daily workstation.

- Audio - good, but (IMHO) don't have background music running all the time.  The level for this introductory video was reasonably good - but it caught my attention during breaks in dialogue, which I am concerned would break concentration when discussing an involved subject.
- A few "Ums" and "Ahhs" - noticeable but not too distracting.  This will get better as you get more comfortable, so don't panic.
- Not showing your face - not a problem at all.  I would be exactly the same.
- Content: Sounds promising.  I've cobbled together a couple of setups, but I'm sure my efforts are the equivalent of Lego.  I would really like to gain some deeper understanding (at a digestable pace) so I can do things better.

- Make sure you don't get too wrapped up in production, special FX and post production efforts.  These can become rods for your own back.  Keep the objective - the content - in the forethought of your efforts.

- Encouragement: 1000%  Do continue!

Definitely interesting in following along; thanks for starting!

Comments on this one:
1. Consider showing some supporting video/slide material rather than just a static desktop; this would help people follow along and stay focused on the content.
2. Definitely 86 the background music. It's a terrible distraction, especially from 2m23s onward and makes the audio horrible at 2m40s onward. It's a minor distraction during the bulk of the video. I liked it for the first 5 to 8 seconds; after that, it added nothing.
3. I think you might have a slight air noise in the mic (it's hard to tell for sure with the bg music, but the audio is acceptable though short of excellent). Might consider a pop or dead cat filter for the mic if you're in a fixed location.
4. No face/head shot is not a big deal at all. It's perfectly normal/reasonable and won't take a bit away from the series. (In fact, it's probably slightly better for technical/computer content.)

Agree.  I was sort of expecting the music to fade completely - but it never did.  Use the music as an intro - and perhaps to wind up a video.

Having consistent introduction and ending tags helps define the video and identify it with the creator.  Take Dave, for example.  He starts out with his (now trademark) "Hi" and finishes with a graphic and sound effect.  You know where the video starts, you know where it ends and you know it's a Dave production.  The important thing is to keep it simple.

1. I am not sure what to put there at this time, I am open to suggestions as much of the content is likely to contain static sections.
2. Agree, I wasn't entirely sure about keeping it there for the entire video
3. Certainly I do... I do not have a professional microphone, I am simply using a headset mic and some aggressive filtering. If this pans out I will look into obtaining some real recording equipment.
3. Great ! :)

Thanks for the feedback guys
