DSP blog I created: Journal2Matlab
« on: June 04, 2018, 08:51:39 pm »
Journal2Matlab is a series where a journal paper (mostly in digital signal processing) is digested into Matlab code in hopes of making research more easily reproducible.  I leave most of the explanation of the code to the journal paper, but check it out maybe of interest to some of you embedded / DSP oriented folks.

Its a disgrace than in 2018 we don't get the original source code and data files used by the authors with published technical articles. Obviously some of it is often somebody else's copyright material, and can't be supplied. However, whatever can be supplied ought to be. Usually there are just enough elements of the original work missing from the paper, that however much you tinker with the problem you can't fully reproduce the published results.

https://www.5things.xyz/journal2matlab gives me a blank page.

First problem I see with this is not everyone has access to the articles as they are behind a paywall (Ieeexplore)

If you don’t provide any explanation on the subject and how you constructed the code form the paper I fail to see how this thing can be useful

If someone is already proficient enough in matlab to understand the code he can implement the paper’s code by himself, if you show a beginner (at whom I think the blog is targeted) the finished code it’s useless since A) he probably won’t understand it
B) won’t know how you got to it from the paper

well there is always: http://sci-hub.tw/ to get around ieee paywalls  ;)

this site keeps track of the current working mirrors of sci-hub https://wadauk.github.io/scihub_ck/index.html

Thanks Syrup, nice to know...

I disagree with you filssavi, first, not everybody looking for something in the forum is a newbie. Second, it's useful to have access to a database of codes in a certain application as it can save a lot of time coding, is usually simpler and faster read a code that's working and figure out how it was done (if it's well writen) than making one from scratch. I find this link very useful, would be nicer to have free access to full papers, sure, but codes are still good and useful.
This also make papers you have access and code is here to be more useful as well, but I guess you find out from the paper and not here.

JS
If I don't know how it works, I prefer not to turn it on.

So basically this topic is an add for the OP hoping to make money. Syrup, would you like to fully declare your interests or do I put you down as one to keep an eye on?

Oh yeah, my interest is just to share some DSP knowledge. I don't care if this makes money or not because I have a job, but there are basic costs with running the website and if someone finds is valuable and worthwhile to support - great. If nobody chooses to support it, whatever, that is totally fine. I'll still be out here making Journal2Matlab either way.
