New YouTube channel: Tinkering With Terrius
« on: March 02, 2017, 08:32:49 am »
Hello Everyone, I've been contemplating posting my channel here for a while now, I finally mustered up the courage to do it!

My channel is called "Tinkering With Terrius" it is mostly electronics related, though there may be an occasional bonus Gaming or Baking episode just for my own amusement. I generally update on Thursdays usually really early in the morning (between 01:00 and 04:00) my time (GMT-7).

I did my best to make my channel description as accurate as possible, "The humble adventures of a newbie electronics hobbyist, learning as I go through experimentation, and perhaps a bit of destructive deconstruction! With the possible bonus gaming or baking video thrown in for fun"

Channel link:
Tinkering With Terrius

The channel itself is fairly relaxed and low budget, I don't have much fancy equipment for recording video (just my laptop and Galaxy S7) and I don't have much disposable income to dedicate to it. I do hope though that my videos have been increasing in quality over the last couple of months as I've become more accustomed to my setup.

The format of my videos is split into two main series, short simple videos I call TWT Minisodes which are under 6 mins in length, and the Regular TWT episodes which are longer.  I have also made a few mailbag/postbag videos as well and I call them Mail Goodies episodes (Mailbag on EEVblog, and Postbag on Julian Ilett's channel are always my favorites and I find them fun to make).

I started my channel at the end of November and I still have a ton to learn about YouTube (Tags are the bane of my existence at the moment). I made the channel for fun and to give me something productive to spend free time on.

I do my best to reply to any comments or questions posted on my videos or tweeted/emailed to me. I would love any advice and/or feedback all of you are willing to provide!

Two most recent episodes:

TWT Minisode #6 (apologies for the shakiness of the video, I forgot to tighten my camera mount and so every bump of the table shook it violently, especially with 8X digital zoom enabled. :( )

TWT #9

P.S.
Is it a good idea to update this thread when I upload a new episode?

I personally don't see any harm in updating this thread or posting when a new video comes out, unless you're spamming out daily or quick videos in which case you might want to use discretion in how many times you post a week.

Thank you for the reply, I saw some channels make a new thread for each episode, and some just update their main thread. I think I prefer the strategy of having it all in one location though.  I will update this thread once (or twice a week if I have multiple uploads) with my new episodes!

Minisode #7: Component tester, Caps and transistors

https://youtu.be/XlLYDNLpfG8

I apologize for there not being much commentary on this video, I had intended to make this a full length episode with a voice over, but unfortunately life got in the way of my editing and recording this week so I had to make do with what I had.

Personally I actually really like today's finished video though, I'm not sure why but I find the music and the fast forwarded video quite calming and enjoyable, maybe sometimes simple is actually nice! Or perhaps I am just weird!  :)

I do plan on posting the finale of my component tester build on Friday, if life decides to let me finish working on it today! That way I can test it out and see how it performs next week!

I also have a LED project that I am planning out right now, it is going to require bread boarding and  probably some experimenting to get it to work out how I want.  It should make a more interesting video than these component tester builds if nothing else!

P.S.
Do any of you have any advice on how to not be hyper critical of your content? I find I tend to be a bit of a perfectionist, and tend to cut out content and even scrap some videos that would probably be decent except for a single flaw that frustrated me.

I can't decide if I am just setting my standards unreasonably high, or if I am saving viewers from terrible videos. :(

Well I didn't get the component tester finished on Friday, but I did get it finished tonight! It is once again fairly short, Thursday's video should be longer.

I plan on running the tester through it's paces this week. Thursday's video will likely be the results of my testing/messing around with it.

Hope you all enjoy the video! If you have any feedback let me know!

So unfortunately I had a HDD fail in my raid array this morning, so I had to spend all day backing up and rebuilding it. This means that my component tester review will have to wait until next week. I did luckily have a video recorded that I intended to post as a bonus episode in the future, so I edited that one and posted it instead.

One of my two Graphics cards has been flaky for a couple months now, it seems to only be under heavy load so I figured I would replace the thermal paste and see if that helped.

New episode of TWT is up, not the most exciting one ever but I test out some different components on the M328P Component tester.

I really wish my orders from AliExpress weren't so delayed, but hopefully they will arrive soon and I can start customizing the tester a bit.

As always feel free to give me comments and feedback!

Upload today was later than expected. I ended up re shooting everything I had recorded yesterday due to quality issues.

TWT #12: PIR LED Project Part 1, LT1073 Circuit fun!
https://youtu.be/12SAe_vgQZM

This video has far fewer cuts than my other build videos and only one fast forwarded section, I'm not sure which style the majority prefer?

I'm thinking the fast forwarding works better for things like kit builds where there is a lot of soldering and where I am focused and not talking, where as in circuit builds like this where I am talking the fewer cut method seems to work better.

Let me know if you guys have any feedback, or if you just want to mock my noob backwards battery fail. :palm:

I posted a new mail goodies episode tonight for anyone that is interested. I finally started getting some of my Aliexpress orders after waiting for 3 months. I also managed to get a JYE DSO 138 Kit off Amazon for $20 with free shipping and no duty, so I felt it was a good deal, despite having non of the SMD components attached.

TWT: Mail Goodies #4
https://youtu.be/vDRvKrdlHso

Last week I also posted a Minisode, but it was fairly poor quality and not all that interesting so I didn't bother making a post for it. I'll link it here just in case anyone is interested. I had intended it to be a full episode with a Soldering tutorial, but there were too many issues with the soldering portion to salvage it.

As always, let me know if any of you have feedback!

Hello everyone, I uploaded TWT #13 today. It is a two part episode on the basics of soldering. The first part is mostly information, the second part has some actual soldering in it. For some stupid reason I decided that right before the soldering demonstration I should swap to a brand new wedge tip that I hadn't had time to use yet, and then to try and demonstrate SMD soldering. So the soldering portion certainly isn't my best work ever, but I show how to fail at SMD soldering if nothing else! :)

Two new videos this week! Yesterday I posted a Mail Goodies that was super quick to edit and began working on my first video of the JYE Tech DSO138 kit build. Today I managed to finish editing the kit build video and now both are uploaded for anyone who is interested!

I recently discovered the video editing software DaVinci Resolve 14 so I decided to use that for the kit video. So far I am loving Resolve 14, it's still in beta and I have had about a dozen crashes, but its video editing power is far superior to PowerDirector15 which is what I normally use (I still had use it to do some audio editing and make the title and ending text).

Hello Everyone!

I had some technical difficulties with my recording yesterday which meant I had to completely re-record the audio. Hopefully I can get back to my regular Thursday posting schedule going forward!

Last Friday I uploaded TWT 15 which was part 2 of the JYE Tech DSO138 build:

Today's episode is the Finale to the kit build:

If any of you have any feedback I'd love to hear it!

It's been a couple weeks and I've posted a couple new videos. I've had a terrible sinus cold since last week so I didn't manage to post the DSO138 testing until today, I had originally planned on posting it Monday.

It seems I have gained quite a few subscribers over the last couple weeks which is really awesome! So a big Thank You to ez24 for adding me to the YouTube electronics channel list (the spike seems to be related to that)!

Also a super big Thank You to anyone on here that watches or subscribes to my channel! You guys are great and I hope to keep doing this for a long time to come!

Last weeks video:

TWT: Mail Goodies #6

This weeks video:

TWT #17: Testing the DSO138
https://youtu.be/UR7CwYuNrlU

I'm not really sure today's episode should have been called "Testing" since it was basically my first time using the DSO138 since I assembled it, but it was fun, and I learned a lot while messing with it. Seems like it will be a very useful piece of kit!

Anyway, I hope you all continue to watch my videos, and if you have comments please let me know! I really enjoy reading feedback (so long as it isn't just "you suck" :) ) and do my best to reply to every comment/tweet/e-mail I get!

Hello everyone, it's time for my bi-weekly post update!

Last week's video was on the basic NOT, AND, and OR logic gates, and today's video is on NAND, NOR and XOR. I'm an entire day late this week with my upload, I didn't expect the editing to take so long... Clearly I need better time estimation skills.

There was also a minisode that I posted last week, somebody mentioned that I could get stable waveforms on the DSO138 by adjusting the trigger threshold. Of course being a Newb I didn't even think of trying that before doing my final video on the DSO138.

Wow! It's been nearly a month since I updated this post. I was away for two weeks and didn't have access to the forums, but now I am back!

Today I posted a new kit build episode. Finally after 4 months I received my blinky LED kits from aliexpress! I still have to put together my Capacitance tester, but after a very stressful two weeks I figured I'd do something easy and enjoyable without many components to work with.

TWT #21: Aliexpress Blinky LED Kit
https://youtu.be/0Y3x0dgiig8

The previous two episodes I posted from my laptop while I was away. It turns out my old laptop just isn't quite fast enough to run one of the editing programs I use. :(

Both episodes from the last 2 weeks are looks at the cheap multimeters I recently purchased from Amazon. The Tacklife was $15, and the Neoteck was $18 (but came with alligator probes).

Mini #10: Tacklife DM02A Meter Unboxing and Review
https://youtu.be/mBOJaL9wRNw

TWT #20: Neoteck NTK017/NT8233D Multimeter Unboxing
https://youtu.be/i09Zm0I32UY

Of course my meter reviews aren't all that in-depth as I have very limited testing equipment, but hopefully they will interest you guys.

Finally on July 4th I decided I would start a new bonus series, it is called T?, or Terrius Talks Tech. It will be made of videos inspired by a Tech article or something computer related (I'm a computer geek) that doesn't quite fit into the main electronics series. It has absolutely no effect on my regular video schedule, and the editing for it was extremely simple since it is a more casual styled Vlog.

If you're interested the first episode of T? was sparked by a tech article that claimed AMD had "its largest quarterly share gain in history".

T3 001: AMD Ryzen - "Its Largest Quarterly Share Gain In Historyā€¯?
https://youtu.be/yLlMKUHSgeI

Whew, that was a lot of updates!

Thank You everyone that watches my channel! I have a blast making these videos and hope they are useful or entertaining for somebody out there!

As usual feedback is always welcomed, be it via Twitter, e-mail, YouTube comments, or here!
