Hi

There is a debate on where the links from this list go to:

https://www.eevblog.com/forum/other-blog-specific/dd/msg1093983/#msg1093983

Currently the links go to the YTer Main tab and most have automatic playing videos.  For those who work on this list, this can drive them almost nuts.  Personally I hate the Home tab links but they make it easier to maintain the list.

Example (chosen at random) of auto-playing video:

And straight to the Videos tab:

One without auto playing (not random)

I also think it's easy enough to deal with.  Either way you end up on a page that has a "Home" tab and a "Videos" tab.

By not adding to the "/videos" extension to the URL, you are saving 7 characters per entry.  Maybe that is a consideration.

Adding complexity that has to be manually actioned by whoever is doing the maintenance will guarantee mistakes, frustration and - quite possibly - abandonment.

Ease of maintenance is, perhaps, THE main consideration for any choices in what gets included.  This is precisely the reason I have gone to the lengths I have in setting up a spreadsheet - to make maintenance of the data simple, with no need to even have knowledge of the Table formatting.

Saving characters per entry is no longer a concern, since the new list uses up the first 3 posts on the thread.

As for what's best, my vote goes to the video's tab - it's the only guaranty we have of seeing everything (by date - default, or by popularity). There are channels out there not maintaining their main page, so nothing shows up (even though they may have hundreds..).

Sorry this poll is outdated.  I am converting links to Playlists if there is one.  If not then Videos.  I could not maintain this list if the links go to the Home tab (because they drive me mad).

This is a matter of some importance.  If maintenance on the list becomes laborious, then the risk of it becoming a burden increases and the whole exercise may fall by the wayside.

This is the very reason why I put the spreadsheet together - to take away as much pain as possible.

I have a reasonably large set of technical Youtube channel bookmarks and ALL of them point to the list of current videos.

Probably a good thing anyway, I’ve seen some home pages with everything listed private, so nothing in the home page but they have videos uploaded and published.
I guess I need to make more playlists, it my usual. I just manage the videos usually and think I have only 1 playlist.

By people subscribing and giving thumbs up I know what I am doing is still wanted and adding value, then will continue to release new videos. Thank you for your support.

I think someone answered this (but I forgot who and what they said).  You say "By people subscribing" but you do not show the number of subscribers.  Why not?  I came across two others today - I am starting to put NA in the field when there is no number.  Before I either left it blank or put a "?" in the field because I did not know what was going on and I thought I was doing something wrong.  I just do not understand this ?

thanks

Adding "/video" to all of the links in a column is simple in Excel. (A1&"/video", for instance)

Very true - but doing so would be a bad idea.  It would hard bake an element of the data into the spreadsheet.  This becomes a problem if you have an exception ... and one that could become ugly to deal with.

The spreadsheet I put together ONLY manages wrangling and formatting of the data.  The content of each field is entirely up to the custodian.  This makes it very straightforward for maintenance - there are no 'special considerations' to have to remember, even if it may mean a little extra typing.

It can be very tempting to develop a solution with so many bells and whistles to make life "easier" that it takes a training session to be able to drive it.  For an intermittent part-time project like this one, such a skill requirement is excessive and much of the training would have been forgotten - so keeping it simple for the custodian is the best course.

Having worked with Excel for many years, I don't see this as a complex fix for a one time addition of some text to an existing column, rather than having to type it. However, seeing ez24 thanked you, I take that as an agreement.

Just an attempt to help. I will butt out.

Hi

I cannot use the "mass" method because not everyone has a Playlist so I have to look at each one.  Brumby did a mass change when I went from Home to Videos because everyone has both.  There are a few that do not have a Playlist.

I got away from Home because videos automatically start playing and it started to make me crazy so Brumby converted them all to Videos.  I knew I could not maintain the list if they all ended up at Home.

Later I changed my mind because I think Playlists more useful and that is where I want to end up.  Someday, if I get complaints about the size of the list, I may delete those that do not have a Playlist.

I very much appreciate your offer of help.  I can use all the help I can get, so thank you and butt back in.  :-+

Just curious - have you seen Brumby's spreadsheet?  It is very complex.  I used to work with Excel and even wrote a 60 page VBA billing program that was used by my office for over 20 years.  Today I will not even sort this spreadsheet because it is so complex.  I refuse to make any mods to it.

Another trivia point is I started out using HTML and was able to edit the list because I put in line spaces between each entry.  One day I opened the list and all spaces were gone.  I think I said I could not maintain the list anymore and Brumby came to the rescue by converting the HTML jumble to a spreadsheet and I was able to continue.

I just uploaded the latest update.

No need to "butt out".  Providing input is always welcome.

My comment arose from the impression that you were not speaking about a "one-off" change - but, as ez24 has indicated, we have gone through a number of one-off changes.  Your only problem was not knowing the history of what has gone before.

I make no claims that the spreadsheet I've put together is optimal, elegant or efficient.  It has grown over several iterations and, no doubt, will have a few signs of such.  However it is, hopefully, functional and robust - and ez24 has learned how to drive it.

Today I will not even sort this spreadsheet because it is so complex.
You can sort the data entry page quite safely.  Just make sure you select all the columns needed and that column headings are checked - the same for any sort.

The formulae in the other worksheets have been written to cope with this (as well as inserts and deletes).  As a result, they may appear to be unwieldy - but they work.
