Frankly I don't see what the joke was.  That was about as funny as going into an airport and shouting "bomb!".  As the man said, they didn't know if his his account was hacked or something else was going on so they were legally and ethically obliged to check it out.  The video poster is an idiot and a jerk and is full of BS! Listen to his rant about supposed FBI involvement in the world Trade Center bombing and other events.

the fbi probably does not want to be going after stupid ass red herings that they are forced to investigate because of public panic rather then dealing with real issues so they choose to make the life of the idiot difficult to act as a deterrent. I am sure they desperately wanted to ignore this guy because it was obvious what was going to happen after they visit someone that posts on youtube.

they want to bust someone stockpiling illegal weapons in large quantity, ties to organized crime, foreign ties to terrorist organizations etc. this is a joke and a hassle for them.

People ... you need to start watching things like this objectively.

The clip in question had a graphic insert into the video stream.

The core question in this whole "investigation" was: Who put it there?  Did everyone not pick up on that?  The Sheriff even made pretty much that exact statement.

There are 2 answers to that question:
Answer 1 - The content creator
Answer 2 - Someone who hacked the account, downloaded the video, edited it and reuploaded it.  This is not hard to do at all once the account has been hacked.  In fact, the type of edit is something that can be done in seconds.  It's a doddle!

The reason they were there was to determine which answer was the real one.  If it had turned out to be Answer 2 then the exercise would have escalated significantly.

For the record, I did not get the joke - and here's why:  He was discussing transformer taps for the international markets.  These are places where the equipment gets sent.  The people watching the video aren't going anywhere - so to suggest they shouldn't travel is completely unrelated to the discussion of where the equipment may end up.

I'm not against content creators throwing in their own personalities into their work - but they should be careful to not throw in this sort of silliness.

I also see this guy as being somewhat arrogant by not being able to see this.  IF Answer 2 were to have been the case and the FBI didn't chase it up and something happened down the road which they could have picked up on by following through here, then, aside from the harm to life and limb, the FBI will get hung out to dry.

If anyone thinks I'm being apologetic here, I DARE them to consider taking on the responsibility any of the anti-terrorist forces around the world.

ok how freaking off your rocker do you need to be to think terrorists hacked a subliminal message into a video like the dick picture in fight club?

what are they chasing the new avant garde film school drop outs from ISIL? at least i got a laugh from it because I imagined a timer attached to a can of campbell's tomato soup.

Law enforcement isn't obliged to check out anything. What they check is at their discretion. As a tax payer I'd wonder about their choice to follow up on this one. There must be more solid leads out there.

Then again, it might not be about any actual case. They might just want to give off the signal that you're being watched.

they don't want a buncha people doing it and egging each other on and having this turn into a prank thats actually somewhat plausible. Like a ISIL subliminal meme turning into something more.

Considering nobody was doing the same thing, that doesn't sound too plausible. More plausible seems to be that they're just showing they're around. If people feel watched, they might behave. That kind of thing.

That's an angle that I could agree with.  If people back off from this sort of silliness, it would help reduce the noise and allow real threats to be easier to identify.  Improved S/N ratio is always better.

It's an angle repeatedly tried in history and it doesn't work. Real surveillance is required, not some high visibility pretend surveillance or security theater.

I wasn't saying "making a show" was an end in itself - just that it would hopefully lessen the chance of "noise" being added to the environment.  Less noise means real surveillance would be more effective.
