0805 or 1206 2cm reflector sensor

Hi,
I wanted to know if anyone has any experience using discrete 0805 or 1206 IR transmitter and receivers to get at least 2cm of reflective response,
I wanted to use them for my hobby project,yes it's a line following robot. I mean using something like these part numbers IR19-21C and PD15-21B-TR8
Any cirucit design or Idea is welcome

how we should calculate the reliable reflection distance?
