2.1x5.5mm DC Jacks and Plugs
« on: April 15, 2017, 10:08:04 pm »
Hopefully, this isn't the most n00b question ever, but why are 2.1mm jacks so hard to find?

When I search Digi-Key for in-line, 2.1x5.5mm plugs, there are 17 items ranging from 5 to 8A from several manufacturers.

When I search for the equivalent jack, I get 2 items both with an industrial looking "solder cup" connector.

It's the same thing on Mouser.

eBay has plenty of jacks, but they don't list amp ratings and there's never a data sheet.

Why the difference?  Shouldn't there be a jack for every plug and a plug for every jack?

Why are you looking for in-line jacks?

While you're at it, try 2.0x5.5mm: The male pin does need to be smaller than the hole it goes into.

I'm wiring a control circuit between a power supply and an LED strip.  The LED strip has a 2.1x5.5mm plug.

Right, but.. why do you need the jack flapping around in the breeze?

Thanks.  That's perfect.  I wonder why the other suppliers don't carry these.

.. Carry what, pretty much the same assortment of 2.1x5.5mm plugs you linked to?

If you're looking for an in-line jack for some reason, search for 2.0x5.5mm. If you want a panel or board mounted jack, remove the in-line mounting filter and search for 2.0x5.5 and 2.1x5.5mm. Digikey have many.

Everything is going to be enclosed but I need to be able to swap the battery pack easily. So I need the 2.1mm jack/plug to get power in.  I could solder the LED directly to the control circuit.
