AC output plugpack design needed
« on: December 30, 2017, 12:59:01 pm »
Howdy all
My GF has lost the powerpack for a lamp which holds sentimental significance to her. Unfortunately the socket label says 6VAC.
Inside it powers a 5W lamp and a 0.5W motor, both 6V. pic here

Any help with a cct for making a PSU would be greatly appreciated. Had it suggested to base it around this tx http://www.altronics.com.au/p/m7252-powertran-10va-6+6v-pcb-transformer/

Thanks very much.

Almost any small mains transformer rated for 6V output will likely do. There is not circuit to deal with, just the primary of the transformer wired to the mains plug (with a fuse in series, if required) and the secondary to the output jack.

But I would first search for a ready-made plugpack - shouldn't be that hard to find something.

I could not find anything off the shelf.

I did think the cct would be quite straight forward but then people started talking about power factors and that's beyond my mostly V=IR DC experience. I'm fine with knocking something up, I just want to make sure it's safely fused.

Hi Scott that trafo you linked will do the job but you have to case it etc, there are tons of 6V adapters here https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1311.R1.TR3.TRC0.A0.H1.X6vac.TRS0&_nkw=6v+ac+adapter&_sacat=0
BUT most of them are DC output (no good to you) and quite a few to low output current, you need 6V AC at an amp or more, happy hunting and just ignore anybody who tries to blind you with junkspeak!
