Can anyone ID this connector?
« on: August 06, 2013, 10:34:54 pm »
This connector is used in many BMW vehicles (cars and motorcycles).

It has the numbers "872 406-501 A" on one edge, and "7507527.9" on the other (not shown in the pics).  The "PA66 GF25" you see in the pic is just the identifier for the type of plastic it's made from.

I also tried to grab a picture under the microscope of what appears to be a logo on the end of the connector.

Anyone able to ID it?  I need to buy a bunch of these but have been looking for a couple hours and can't find it!

It's not always the most popular person who gets the job done.

Could be, but I've tried searching through their catalogs and there are so many hundreds of different ones, I am not finding this one.

Googling it, someone said BMW uses AMP connectors, another said Delphi, another said FCI :)

Thanks for the link, but it's none of those :(

This one is really small, 0.35" x 0.22" (about 9mm x 5.5mm), water sealed and has a polarization slot running lengthwise from the end to the seal.

It definately isn't Deutsch. All Deutsch connectors use round pins and sockets. Deutsch also usually includes their name and part number on the housings.

The logo is not any I recognize but I'm not that familar with European car connectors.

I got several hits searching for 872 406-501 but none ientified the manufacturer. I thought 7507527.9 might be a DIN standard but didn't get a hit.

Automotive connectors are tough to find because the manufacturers deal directly with the auto manufacturer and have little or no distribution. They have thousands of SKUs they build to order and will design a new connector if the manufacturers want something they don't have.

As an example, at my former employer a customer wanted us to but some Sumitomo and Yazaki parts to supply a few hundred harnesses per year. None of the connectors were in stock and a few we couldn't even get samples or even datasheets. The lead time was 20 weeks with minimum order of 4,000 to 5,000 housings and 20,000 to 40,000 terminals.

It ended up being about $50,000 of inventroy and was enough for several years production. Unforunately the actual quantity was much lower the estimate and was only needed for 3 years. The customer ended up having to buy much of the inventory.

The logo looks like Hirschmann.
Why spend money I don't have on things I don't need to impress people I don't like?

Your part number is not there but you could try asking them.

BMW, like Toyota, have a parts listing of all connector shells and pins, but getting a dealer to trawl through the myriad shapes and sizes is not always easy. I have the Toyota .pdf file, but not the BMW one. If you e-mail the images to MOTEC in Australia (the motorsport ECU people)  they may have come across it, or have a suggestion where to grab the relevant .pdf of BMW shells from. www.motec.com.au
Best regards,

                 Chris Wilson.

I am looking for the same connector.  Did the OP have any luck in getting a hold of them?  Thanks.
