connector search - like a "low profile" dsub?
« on: May 24, 2018, 01:09:25 pm »
I could do with a connector, of about 12 ways, that is similar to a dsub, but lower profile (ie lower overall height from the pcb top surface)  It needs to have physical locking (screws, clips etc) and be relatively robust. Something like a single inline dsub.  Is there such a thing that doesn't cost the earth (ie no rarefied MIL spec unobtainium options please ;-) )

Shrunk Delta Ribbon (SDR) connectors?  Not sure if you can get bare plugs easily, and cable assemblies tend to be pricey on account of being made from multi twinax, but the connectors themselves otherwise meet your requirements.

How about a micro-D? A bit pricy, but generally good quality - http://uk.farnell.com/c/connectors/d-sub-connectors-components/micro-d-sub-connectors

You could take a look at the Harwin Gecko line:

Not cheap. But great stuff.

Next question, can i run USB through such a connector? I'd imagine so, they look relatively low loss??

You can run USB2 (480Mbps) on a micro-D connector, as long as the wires are short, and the D+ and D- are adjacent. I had a design that did just that, however the cable was very short (<30cm).

You can get sealed micro-D connectors as well. Long ago, I specified them for a data recording device, one specimen at least of which was able to preserve its contents after few days unintended immersion in the North Sea.

Searching for connectors is SUCH fun!

I particularly like the way that the usual distributors make no effort to cross link any of the parts, so that to actually buy a complete connector set (ie, the plug, contacts, backshells, matching socket, contacts and backshells etc) it take the detective skills and logical reasoning of an actual genius....   |O

anyway, it look slike the 3M 102 series micro D is the answer  :-+
