ESP8266 breakout boards with buttons reset and flash ?
« on: December 03, 2017, 03:56:02 pm »
Hi,
I bought some esp8266-12 and some white breakout boards.
but these boards are not as I want. I almost always need a reset and a flash button on it.
so I drilled these boards, installed 2 buttons, some resistors and voilà.
but it takes time.
I searched on ebay but did not find any simple breakout boards with 2 buttons, eventually with a 3v regulator.
it exists but for the esp32.
does anyone have a link for such a board ?
thanks.

Have you looked at the NodeMCU? They've got flash and reset buttons, plus USB for programming. You can pick them up on eBay for almost nothing.

You basically get the Wemos D1 mini clones for 3€ delivered from eBay - They feature a reset button and USB <-> TTL interface etc. Why bother with those breakout boards?

the wemos d1 boards only have the reset button . how do you flash them ? is it automatic or do you need a flash button, you put on the pcb ?

You don’t need to boot them into flash mode as with the ESP32.
Simply connect via USB and upload your sketch. (I am using the Arduino IDE and ESP board manager)

Regarding other break out boards I guess the options are limited. You would either design your own PCB that features an ESP8266 as a component or you get one of those Wemos / NodeMCU / whatever dev boards, since getting a break out board and ESP8266 module is about the same cost as getting a readily assembled unit with serial interface and all that. Maybe on Alibaba / Aliexpress there are more variants.

If you need PCB's only, I have done a while ago some related ones. You can order them directly from DirtyPCB.

1. nEXT Evo board: a full ESP8266 board, you can have a nice small all-in-one module with nEXT Bus connector (I2C) for easy adding exending modules: http://dirtypcbs.com/store/designer/details/6858/525/esp8266-cbdb-next-evo-devboard

Bonus, a secondary nEXT AN-1 Analog Extesion Board PCB that brings you a 18Bit ADC (autoscale 0-40V input!), 4x12Bit DAC, Precison Temperature measurement, 8bit I/O port, etc.

2. For just a very simple ESP8266 adapter, you can use half of the MPSMv2 PCB, available also here at Dirty PCB:

I must admit that I've use it a lot as a quick ESP adapter :)

Happy breadboarding,
TJ.
