This chip is 35-45 years old(circa 1978?) and from what I've managed to find googling it, only NEC may have the rest of the 259-page datasheet in some dusty file cabinet, while only the first 3-pages seem to be available online. This chip is very complicated and you haven't a chance to even start to get it to work without spending days studying the full datasheet.

Find some video controller chip that is newer, well-documented. It will work better, be easier to use, less expensive, less power-hungry, etc.

Better yet, Google for Nextion simple to interface and very inexpensive displays.

I would say your only chance would be to reverse engineer an early 8080 or Z80 CPM computer video board using this chip.

Hope this helps:

Edit: More here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NEC_%C2%B5PD7220

Look at external links including Source code of driver for CP/M-86 as well as all of the Reference links (although some are dead links)

For example the Intel GDC reference link is a dead link but looking for the file name pdf I found this:
http://www.nj7p.org/Manuals/PDFs/Intel/230685-001.pdf

Edit again:
http://www.vintagecomputer.net/fjkraan/comp/virtlibrary.html
Look for 7220 more docs in there (not the bubble memory one though) and one is in german with sample code from "MC Magazine 11/1986"

People like to do retro builds, nothing wrong with it.

Actually learning the legacy helps you understand better why it evolved the way it did.
