Magic smoke captured
« on: July 19, 2017, 03:29:56 am »
I was fooling around with my new (WIP) high current PSU, and managed to capture the magic smoke of an electrolytic cap, I also received some help from my 2yo son.

Looks like fun but get your kid some safety glasses or a visor & make sure you have plenty of fresh airflow.

Kid will probably think wearing safety glasses is cool.   :-+

I was gonna' say

would be a really good safety glasses "teachable moment"
I'm new here, but I tend to be pretty gregarious, so if I'm out of my lane please call me out.

I did that with my 2 year old (now 3). Whenever we were playing with the lawnmower, whipper snipper or any other power tool he got glasses and ear protectors just like dad did. Now he has his own set and goes to put them on as soon as he see's me walk out with the drill. Best trick ever. Better than that, because I'm slack and have never been fastidious with my own PPE when I forget he goes and gets mine and brings them to me.

Kids are so much fun. Moments like that (the photo you shared) make all the late nights and nappies worthwhile.

You guys are absolutely right, I totally forgot about the glasses, they were hanging on the wall rack completely safe from all those sparks. Will keep in mind for the next time.

Is the smoke still smoke or has it dropped out of suspension by now?

With owners of classic British sports cars, it is well known that the electrics run on smoke. Do not let it out.

Should the worst happen, help is available:

Gold. Sent it to my old man for his freshly restored TR4A. It spent 10 years getting its smoke put back in, but I'm sure it'll all come out again sometime soon.

Like the old saying goes. "The Brits drink warm beer because Lucas made the refrigerators".

You have to compress and cool the smoke to cryogenic temps before it turns back into ether. Once that is done, it must be kept at supercritical pressures. However, once it sublimates, there is no getting it back into a solid form.
