My Rendition of the Constant Current Dummy Load
« on: March 22, 2015, 09:47:45 pm »
Hi guys,

Over my winter break, I started working on a constant current dummy load based on Dave's work, and on Chris' work (from sleepyrobot.com).

Finally got to finishing it over my spring break this past week.

Here's some information about it:

-External AC/DC power suppply
-Fan cooled (no temperature control at the moment)
-Load switch (with LED indicator)
-10-turn pot
-Internal trimmer to set max current (currently set at 1A, but can most likely do 2-3A)
-Yellow and black banana jacks for current measurement (1A/1V)
-10x 10ohm Vishay CPF3 (3W) resistors

I made up a brand name for it called "ClifTest" which has to do with the city I'm from, and "DCL-1" basically just means DC Load 1.

Thanks! Love to hear any feedback you have.

Looks pretty good.  :-+

I've tried to build one of those 3 times now. Never have ended up with one that really works right.

I built one as a portable unit, battery powered

You can also power a load with it's DUT :-) (under certain circumstances, but actually modern SEPIC or Zeta converters should make this easier)

Preliminary testing says that it works well, but I haven't checked too many types of power supplies or every condition yet.
