neon bulb potting reliability?
« on: August 16, 2017, 06:14:52 pm »
Can you pot a neon bulb in epoxy? I made a modification of a small light bulb holder to house a neon bulb (by breaking the light bulb and soldering stuff in there)

Can the neon bulb be potted with clear epoxy, or will this lead to some kind of thermal failure? I wanted to make it more robust, as the wires inside of the bulb are fairly wonky.

I don't see why the potting should cause a thermal failure, as neon lamps don't get very hot. If you think it's a problem, keep the current low.

No, it'll be fine, disipation is minimal. In the old days people (not me you understand, just people :D) used to pot bunches of them in resin blocks as flashing paperweights. Just remember though that neons don't last for ever.
Best Regards, Chris

As long as you don't use conductive epoxy, like JB weld.

Extension cords have neon-lamps molded inside them as indicators and works fine.

Instead, I use an LED and a resistor+shunt diode, as some chinese neon lamps they push them hard for brightness and they don't last that long. Flicker flicker.

I like neon bulbs because its hard to see them going short circuit.
I just potted it up to the base (bottom 1/5th or so )of the bulb, I guess it will be fine.

I looked at using a Christmas lamp holder thing to keep the leads apart. The neon lamps are a bit wider, so it may be possible to slightly drill out the lamp holder. Then at least the leads are held apart.
