New version Pulse Generator (based Jim Williams Pulse Gen)
« on: October 11, 2015, 09:51:47 am »
I designed a new version of the pulse generator, based on the design by Jim William "Pulse Gen"
The main objectives were:
- small size (the overall size of the casing 48x67mm (PCB 42x59mm)
- low cost
- easy accessibility to the elements (including the transistor 2n2369A)

specification:
Rise Time 250 - 300 ps
Vp-p 8-10 V
pulse repetition - 5-15 us

To power the system, I use CR2450 batteries, current consumption of the gen does not exceed 3mA. This should provide approximately 100 hours of work.
Project is easily upgrade to the version of the SMA connector.
If someone is interested, I can arrange several sets (all componenst + casing for your own soldering - set of parts) or ready-soldered ready to use

PCB

Not sure when looking at your circuit and pcb design, does it have built in transmission line at the pcb ?

Edit :

Referencing other thread building similar pulse gen with transmission line built in at the pcb :

This version does not have the transmission line, some regulation of the pulse, provides trimmer C7.
Transmission line, does not allow the pulse width adjustment.

Can you show screenshots of the pulse with say a 100MHz, 500MHz, and 1GHz scope? Would be very interesting.

I designed a new version of the generator inpulsów, based on the design by Jim William "Pulse Gen"
The main objectives were:

... and the results are?
There are lies, damned lies, statistics - and ADC/DAC specs.

Since free_electrons kits don't seem to materialise I'm interested in a kit if you make them available, thanks for offer!. But please do post some screenshots of its actual performance.

The rise time of this generator is 250 - 300ps

I look forward to the delivery of PCB, and LT1073 ....

So it looks like on an oscilloscope Rigol DS 2302A

And sample measurement (TDR)  cable you can see the reflection at the cable end

We've discussed to death why the rise time measurement is meaningless if it doesn't come flat at the top. Your readings will be off by anywhere from 0% to 50%, and worse, on the optimistic side. You need the transmission line.

That is why for a long time I think over building a fully regulated ns - ps pulse generator...
Please note that this is a very simple generator. Based on one element - transistor executive ...and low cost
everything depends on what we need the "pulse" generator ...

However, if the pulse lasts several ns, it is no longer a pulse generator ...only a rectangular signal generator though with a fast rise time

Yes, but that is much more commonly desired than an impulse. What do you need a non-flat impulse for? Certainly not rise time measurements, unless you're looking to get silly "optimistic" numbers.

I'll see how it will work adjustable capacitor C7....

you can make that pulse go faster by doing dead spider. right now you have a parasite with the ground plane being so close to output and coax

After around two years of using this PG a have only few suggestion's.
- I was surprised using BNC connector and I think SMA would be better. (but it's work relatively fine)
- and as said my friend different is only at PCB design and this longer OnTime which I'm not sure if it's improvement. (little bit design change would be big improvement)
- max-bit it's really bad if you move or remove images which is used in this thread (please upload it to eevblog or repair your links)

i just got a batch of boards in for my pulse generator design ( about 100 pieces ).

5$ + shipping for a pcb. ( in the us that is a regular envelope with stamp)

i need to see if i can scavenge some more of the gold plated transistors. will post an update over the weekend.

Does your design use a capacitor or a transmission line (coax or stripline) for charge storage?
In other words, does the generated pulse have an upper plateau (i.e. a step), or is it just a hump (i.e. an impulse)?

yes, my design has a strip line and has a plateau.

about 80 of these have been built and they have been measured on one of the most performant oscilloscopes in the world :
DSA-X 93204A: 32GHz analog bandwidth. 80 Gigasamples per second on 4 channels ,2.1 Billion points of memory, PER channel.

Very nice. Just long enough pulse for risetime measurements, not so long as to stress/kill the Q1 prematurely.
I see you use the good old 2N2369. I have a few of these NOS, original Motorola, made decades ago (still in factory packaging). I've been keeping them for this type of project. Now that I have a 2 GHz scope, I'm motivated. Definitely mark me down for two PCBs. I'd also be interested in full or partial kits. Letter mail to Canada shouldn't be an issue, I've received quite a few different non-document things via letter mail from the USA.

right . let me dig in my garage to see if i still have a pile of those transistors ( i think i do ) gold plated legs. NOS SGS or Motorola's.
i will create a separate topic where you can place the request. I need ot check for shipping internationally what they charge these days. i would do board + transistor. the rest you need to take care of yourself ( i did complete kits previously but that takes a lot of time. if there is enough demand we could do that again. all parts are available at digikey.

let me organise my thoughts and i will set it up.

I've gotten interested in building a pulse generator for some TDR experiments. There's a nice looking TDR adapter design on Mr. Carlson's lab but he didn't go into much detail on component choices. I know the transistor needs to be carefully selected but how critical is the capacitor? Can I expect reasonable performance using any old ceramic chip cap I find in the right value or does it need to be something specific? Extremely fast risetime pulses are new territory for me.

If anyone in Australia is interested, particularly if they are in Melbourne, Rockby have 13 x 2N2369 transistors in stock for under $1.40 each. If you have to use mail order, that is an extra $10.

https://www.rockby.com.au/SearchresSql_12.cfm?Searchkey=2n2369

I haven't been following the pulse generator discussion well enough to know if there are good and bad versions of this transistor.

REALLY hoping to get anything you have.... PCB, transistors, etc. 2 pieces should be good if available.

I live in California, should be easy.

WOW.

Talk about timing.  (<- haha)

I was just drooling over this design (Vince/svgarage) but it looked long dead / abandoned.  To see that it was just revived, just now, when I was looking, wow.

PLEASE put me down for 2.  Hell I can easily get rid of 10 of them to others if you find you don't have enough takers or if you would rather batch up sales.

Also I'm in south bay and can help with or just take over the distribution if it helps you at all.  Maybe even do pre-assembled kits if folks want -- although since from the looks of it this comes with a "cal cert" I suppose they are assembled.

If you have plenty available, I take two PCB's and two transistors, otherwise I am happy with one.

i have acquired a bunch of original motorola NOS ( new old stock ) A versions of the transistors.

I am willing to do another action ( board + parts ) if there is enough interest. i will do a price calculation this week.
That way you don't individually have to go hunt for 'difficult components'.
i would sip the case and the battery holder all the 'thin' items easily fit in a regular envelope.

Me too, I was waiting for that other thread -- I am interested in 1 PC board + transistors.

Somewhat related, I've thought about playing with the FMMT417.   After searching for avalanche transistors in Digikey, I went on a web search for that part and found this -- fascinating, but way more amplitude than I can imagine ever needing: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/251842621_Compact_Subnanosecond_Pulse_Generator_using_Avalanche_Transistors

Besides the pulse generator, there is a nice description of their custom designed 1400:1 probe in there.  Like, mounting SMT 1206 resistors on their side to limit parasitic capacitance.  I guess they had a reason to use 1206 vs 01005 or printed resistors, perhaps cost or DfM but they don't mention it.

Vincent, clearly there's no financial incentive here, any objection to publishing the files for your PCB design?  It would be highly educational.  (I'd still want to buy 2 kits from you either way.)

i will do a price calculation for kits today. i have a good idea now how many people want a board  + transistors
i will compile a list of people who have posted so far.

i have plenty of transistors available.

two options are available

pcb + 2 transistors
pcb + 2 transistors + all other parts. including the case ( but not milled )

international shipping can get pricey .. that i have not found a good solution for yet. USPS used to have a flat rate that was pretty cheap but has now skyrocketed to 21$ ...

i will post an update later today and will activate a website where you can place the order (paypal only)

Making full kits is a whole lot of work. I've organized a group buy before, so I know what I'm talking about. Don't want to put that burden on you.

This thread is so old the original schematics are no longer available from the posts near the beginning, so I could only be provisionally interested in PCB plus transistors until the schematic and PCB layout can be reattached to this thread.

Thanks
