PartKeepr - Open Source Inventory Management
« on: February 04, 2017, 12:26:22 am »
Hi,

after more than 6 years working on PartKeepr, I feel it's the right time to spread the word on the EEVBlog forums. Thanks to Dave, I got my hands on electronics about 7 years ago and quickly had the need for an inventory management solution for electronic components. At that time, only rudimentary projects were available, so I started to develop PartKeepr in my spare time.

I released version 1.2 of PartKeepr a few days ago, which now has got (almost) all features I needed in the first place when I started electronics. Notable features are:

- OctoPart integration
- Project Management
- Import and Export
and many more.

PartKeepr is open source software, which means that you can download and use it free of charge on your own server. If you cannot or don't want to install and maintain it yourself, my company offers PartKeepr hosting in different packages.

But words are only words, here's a demo of the software and here's the main website

Over the years, quite some companies have adopted PartKeepr for their inventory needs, which include Xing, NASA and DLR (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt / German Aerospace Center). I also know of quite some companies who use PartKeepr to manage their product runs.

I hope that it will be useful to some of you.

All the best
Felicia

Wow! This looks great and I will have to check it out in detail. Seems very comprehensive and it is a nice UI.

Hey! I actually adopted PartKeepr as a result of the discussions on the thread I started at https://www.eevblog.com/forum/chat/keeping-track-of-things-in-the-lab/

Installation took me quite a while on a VM (I went for v1.2) and it's still not quite right (get a warning about cronscripts) and it is a bit slow but functionally it is quite good... for example I can capture a photo with my webcam as I stash a part away.

Definitely worth trying out.  Recommended.

One extra I would like is the ability to print labels as I put things away (perhaps with the InternalID#).. I have a collection of Epsom TM-88 printers that might re-purposed.

This looks fantastic! Our prototyping lab at work is a constant mess, so something like this would be a godsend. I think I'll play with it a bit next week.

I tried to install it on my local Apache installation in Linux Debian, but I had some problems, now it works. Details: I downloaded https://downloads.partkeepr.org/partkeepr-1.2.0.zip and followed the instructions how to configure Apache (e.g. AcceptPathInfo works etc.). Then I unpacked the zip file to /var/www/html/partkeepr-1.2.0. I opened http://localhost/partkeepr-1.2.0/web/setup/index.html and clicked next and got the error as described here: https://github.com/partkeepr/PartKeepr/issues/570 As suggested by one comment, I removed the WebserverRewriteTest test from web/setup/js/Cards/PrerequisitesTestCard.js, looks like it is not needed and I don't want to install it on the root directory for my local installation. There where lots of other errors because of missing packages, e.g. "LDAP extension not loaded", which I could solve by "apt-get install php5-ldap". I didn't like to create the database manually, PHP could have done this, too for me, with useful defaults for all the fields, like "localhost" for the hostname. Another thing I didn't like is that I can't select and copy text from the error message box when installing.

After installing, looks good, I'm entering now all my parts with it. Some problems I encountered so far:

- when  I add a distributor for a part, I can't set the currency field, it is always empty. But the "price per item" shows the Euro symbol. Looks like in the demo installation the currency field is sometimes USD, sometimes EUR, but even if it is USD, the "price per item" shows EUR, for example for the part TSM2311CX (and would be nice to have a space between the number and the currency in the "price per item" field)

- "Avg. price" in the overview is 0.00 € (again, a space betweeen the number and the currency symbol would be nice). Where can I change this?

- when I add a new footprint, then add a new part, the new footprint is not available. Looks like I have to reload the webpage, then I can choose the new footprint

FWIW I have abandoned PartKeepr.  It is just too slow (on my hardware), too painful to use.

Was it too slow from the beginning, or after you entered lots of parts? Would be bad if I enter all my parts only to find out that it gets slower. At the moment it is fast, same as their public web demo at https://demo.partkeepr.org with lots of parts.

PS: the webdemo shows an error when you search for parts, in my offline version there is no error.

Hm... probably slow from the beginning but I was more tolerant then.  Currently I have alot of parts in Partkeepr but I will export those from the database when I have time and go back to spreadsheets.
Another annoying feature was Order by Internal ID.... that doesn't seem to work (also doesn't work in web version).

Is this possible to install in a windows machine? any instructions available?

The Virtual machine image here https://www.partkeepr.org/download/ is for windows?, but it is a very old release (v0.1.9)

or will this work on a RPi3?

Hello everyone.

First of all a big thanks for taking the time to read this post  :-+

Until now i spend weeks trying to install partkeepr on windows  platform
without any luck yet. ( https://www.partkeepr.org/ )
I was wandering if someone would be so kind to explain (for dummy's)
a step by step tutorial how to install the program.

I am positive that beside me thousands of people will be thankful.

THANK YOU. :-+

Yes, me too wish the same. This is an amazing tool but I think the  lack of documentation is keeping many users away from it.

I too tried to install on windows and failed(run from git method), and went the virtual machine way- Debian9 on Virtual Box in Windows7.
https://wiki.partkeepr.org/wiki/PartKeepr_on_Debian_%22Stretch%22#Install_MariaDB

being a windows guy, it was one hell of a ride setting up everything, and some commands on the above mentioned installation guide were out of dated due to the update of MariaDB etc..
I took support from IRC - #partkeepr, #debian, #mysql and #maria to finish the setup.
am not using this now as me and my pc is not comfortable with this virtual machine way.

and I came to know that this project and the developer is going through serious financial and personal issues too.
https://sandbox.partkeepr.com/crowdfunding/

I did a small patreon to support as much as I could.
