PCB Etching Marker Issues
« on: December 17, 2009, 08:37:26 am »
So I've had good luck with the toner transfer method and ferric chloride on PCBs but sometimes I need to fix things with a marker. I found a regular sharpie didn't do the trick so I bought a special Industrial Sharpie.

It was advertised as being a "specially formulated ink for industrial use" that "remains permanent under most chemical washes"

I guess Ferric Chloride isn't one of those chemical washes  ???

Could anyone recommend a marker to use that will survive a ferric chloride bath?

Hi,

A "Dalo" Pen will work :)
http://www.jprelec.co.uk/store.asp/c=689/Etch-Resist-PCB-Marker-Pen---Decon-Dalo

I used to use these back in the 80's to do PCB's by hand with Ferric Chloride etch. I switched in the 90's to Ammonium Per-sulphate.

I need to work on getting toner transfer working lol would also be nice to get copper plating working so I can do through hole ;)

Regards,

Kat.

Thank you! I trust something that's specifically advertised to be for etching PCBs.

I'm curious, is there an advantage to etching with Ammonium Persulphate?

Cheers.

Edit: They only ship to the UK. I'm having trouble locating one from a place that ships to the US. I would have thought Jameco would have it!

Are there any other products like this that I would have better luck finding?

One advantage is that it does not make that rusty stains.
With etching I do not see any difference.
But I do only single sided.

I use the UV method. I print with a laser printer on a transparent sheet and put it under a UV light for a couple of minutes.
Then take of the protective ink with NaOH.
Why spend money I don't have on things I don't need to impress people I don't like?

you can get the pens at a stationery shop, don't pay big bucks to rip off companies like maplin that see permanent marker pens for X 10 their value

For corecting toner transfer I use permanent markers that are used for writing on CD/DVD. You can find these with the range of tip size.

I usually put the paint twice. Put the first coat let it dry and stipple next coat over it.
