PL2303HX Where to get the real deal
« on: May 26, 2018, 09:55:10 am »
I need 10, USB to RS-485 dongles for a project. The legit FTDI ones from Digi-Key are a bit steep at $25 a pop.

The clones on Ebay are about $1, but use the cloned Prolific PL-2303HX chip (SSOP28) that causes no end of driver issues with Windows, so one solution might be to simply swap the cloned chip for a real one.

The problem is where to purchase the legit versions, Digi-Key and Mouser don't sell them. Does FTDI or other vendor offer a drop in substitute for the PL-2303HX, if so I can add a dozen on my next Digi-Key order or if they don't, a reliable source for a legitimate PL-2303HX in a SSOP28 package?

I bought mine years ago on Newegg, it might not've even been them but a marketplace seller.  Think it was around $10.

Irony being, because it's old, it's not supported by new drivers; it's as good as counterfeit by the manufacturer.  I forced the original driver version and it's fine.

Ed: RS-232 dongle, that is.

Most of the stuff from china has switched to the CH340G. The PL2303 clones are not common anymore.

For example... https://www.ebay.com/itm/132486311868

Avoid these... https://www.ebay.com/itm/321636098509  (RS-485 requires 3 wire to ensure common mode voltages)

I would stay away from ftdi and prolific for good. And any other manufacturer that pulls the same kind of stunts with their drivers.

What would you recommend, then?

Go for the CH340 / CH341? At least the 'fakes' are genuine. Check the driver status though.
Best Regards, Chris
