RIGOL DS1054Z MAJOR PROBLEM
« on: March 15, 2018, 11:20:13 pm »
Hi everyone,
Unable to upgrade the options (100Mhz) etc on my Rigol DS1054Z. Displays invalid code on entry.
Followed the instructions on the many Youtube videos ie. enter the serial number into www.goroot.ca
to generate the key etc.
Any help very greatly appreciated as I bought it expecting to be able to upgrade to 100Mhz and have the longer memory.
Purchased last year from Emona in Sydney .
Software version 00.04.04 SP1
Board version 0.1.4
Cheers
George

I wouldn't call that a major problem. It's very possible due to the browser or way you enter it into the keygen. Try another browser.

Hi, as one that had his share of troubles with upgrading a RIGOL, even a MSO model that is much of a pain to do (one needs to dump the memory by opening it), I'll try to walk you trough the basic checklist:

- 1) Don't panic and don't try stuff found on obscure websites and youtube videos, this a click/views bringing theme and many of those videos and pages are just click baits, sadly even if the makers of them are technically incompetent in all things electronics related, they are experts in promoting their crap and it will show up on your searches, I'll say use EEVBLOG only as source of information for this project.

- 2) Have you used the correct website for the generation, the correct link is:
http://gotroot.ca/rigol/riglol/
Be aware of other copycats and fake pages, and also when you type some stuff in a help message, make sure that you type correctly, this goes for numbers, error messages and so on.

- 3) Did you type the serial number fully and with correct capitalization, younger people don't care too much about capitalization nowadays, but serial generators do  ^-^.

- 4) Did you select the right options to activate on your scope, DS1000z device options:
DSAB - Advanced Triggers
DSAC - Decoders
DSAE - 24M Memory
DSAJ - Recorder
DSBA - 500uV Vertical
DSEA - 100MHz
DSFR - all options

I know is tempting to try the DSFR to activate all and be done, because is boring and tedious to enter them, but if the "All Options" key is not working, try individual options, for example DSEA and see if it works.

- 5) Send your scope serial number in a private message to a member who is willing to help you, better make a picture of your scope back label and front panel System Info value of the S/N, to make sure that they are equal and send these pictures to the one that helps you. Compare and test the key you're receiving from him with yours.

- 6) Fortunately for you, your scope desn't need to be opened to dump its RAM, there are some commands to do it and use a serial generator program on it, this is more cumbersome and use it after you've tried and failed all the above options.

 Good luck,
 DC1MC

No.

The 500 uv/div option does NOT work with the 1054z, so don't even try it. If you enable it it causes other problems.

The correct option code for _all_ options EXCEPT the 500uv/div, PLUS the 100MHz bandwidth boost is

DSER  not DSFR.

Which is not documented in the riglol keygen "help" screen but will generate the correct key anyway.

It is very likely that you simply mis-read or mis-typed a character in the serial number or the unlock code, or that your web browser has been giving you problems when generating the code. Please try the following:

- Make sure you do not misspell any letters when entering the key.
- Refresh the RIGLOL web page and try to generate the key again.
- Try another browser and try to generate the key again.
- Download the executable for the key generator and run it locally.

The serial number is printed on the physical label on the back of the scope, too. Plese check and compare. Some characters can be hard to read in the small screen font.

To enter the option key, you can also use the telnet command :SYSTem:OPTion:INSTall, instead of the error-prone entry via the encoder knob.

Check for common traps:

- I (i) mixed up with 1 or l (L)
- 0 mixed up with O or Q
- Capitals?

This firmware is multiple confirmed to still work with the codes.

You know what, funny story about this topic. I was at embedded world in Germany couple of weeks ago talking to the Rigol guys at their stand. And they did actually swore by high and low that they did not anticipate this hack and that they certainly did not engineer it in, like some people claim.

Hi,
Thank You to all the people that have replied.
Yes, I have started to panic as I have tried to install the options several times in the past
1. I am sure I have the correct serial number (read the label on the back and checked in the system lists)
And I am sure I am entering all letters and numbers correctly
2. Entered the S/No in gotroot.ca/rigol/riglol (= Roglol 1.03d)
3 Have  tried DSER option (all except 500 microvolt) plus individual options many times). Presently getting
"install avoid for 12 hours" message so have to run scope for 12 hours before I try again.
4. Have tried two browsers with exactly the same results. Always get the same key codes, for options, when entering into
gotroot site.
5.Read most of the info on the  DS1054Z on eevblog
If I list my scopes serial number on eevblog will someone PLEASE enter it into gotroot  (for say the DSER option)
so I can compare the result ??? (cannot see why i could get hacked etc)
Cheers
George

Using copy and paste and telnet is much faster and avoids the risk of typos:

Connect to your scope via telnet: (change the ip-address and the key in this example)

> telnet 192.168.1.100 5555
Trying 192.168.1.100...
Connected to 192.168.1.100.
Escape character is '^]'.
*IDN?
RIGOL TECHNOLOGIES,DS1104Z,DS1ZA170XXXXXX,00.04.04.SP3

to install an option:

:SYST:OPT:INST PDUY9N9QTS9PQSWPLAETRD3UJHYA

To uninstall the options installed:

:SYST:OPT:UNINST

If you prefer USB instead of LAN, use the following command:

echo "*IDN?" > /dev/usbtmc0; cat /dev/usbtmc0
RIGOL TECHNOLOGIES,DS1104Z,DS1ZA170XXXXXX,00.04.04.SP3
cat: /dev/usbtmc0: Connection timed out

Got your PM. but unfortunately I can't respond, the "newbie protection" is still in power, I think you need to have more than 5 posts or delete some PM because the error message is "...Inbox full...".

To give you some opportunities to post some messages ;), here are two things:

1) Have made that you have the latest firmware installed, here are (part of) the release notes for it:
[Supported Model]    All the MSO/DS1000Z Series Digital Oscilloscopes
[Latest Revision Date] 2017/03/24

[Updated Contents]
--------------------
v00.04.04.03.02  2017/02/06
     - Improved the LXI module
     - Fixed the freeze problem when upgrading based on the boot version of
       0.0.0.13
     - Improved the menu in the language of Traditional Chinese and Korean
     - Modified the failure when downloading waveform to the source module
     - Fixed bugs about reading the memory data through SCPI commands
     - Fixed bugs about Measure
     - Fixed bugs about Filter

2) I will not post your full key here, just the last part, to compare with your keys:

Advanced triggers (DSAB):
XXX....XXXX-8VNUB9A

100MHz bandwidth (DSEA):
XXX...XXX-33HRA8A

If the last characters are similar, then try first upgrading the firmware to the latest version and retry.
If not, then do more posts to have your inbox released :)

 Cheers,
 DC1MC

Hi,
Well this is interesting.
For the DSER option (everything except 500 micro) I now have two more codes in addition to the original.
Al (alsetalokin40170) sent me a code ending in RFKQRYA and I got the same results with I tried a  Hp win 10 laptop (had not used this before).
The same serial number in an old Toshiba laptop (win 7) gave another code ending in 5UZER6A.
All machines used Firefox.
So it looks like the results of the code generator vary with the version of windows ??
Still locked out after my last attempt at entering codes
Regards
George

Hi,
For interest.
DC1MC kindly sent me two more codes for DSAB (advanced trig.) his ending in 8VNUB9A I got L3M6BSS (win 7 machine) AND the same ending with win 10....(got one right)
DSEA (100Mhz) he got 33HRA8A but i got YQVXAES (win 7) and WNT3A6A (win 10)..... both different
Don't mind trying them all but the machine keeps locking me out.
Sigh..........

If you look on the riglol page you'll find a place where you can download a zipfile containing the executable code for the keygen. It comes in 4 flavours: Windows executable, Linux, OSX and HTML (which will open in your browser). The Linux needs to be compiled but all the source is there; those who run Linux will know how to compile for their machines.
I have found running the keygen locally works every time, whereas problems happen frequently when running it from the webpage on the internet.

As I briefly stated above ("I concur") I got the same codes as DC1MC for those two option sets.

Another common mistake is mixing up "S" and "5" in the small font Rigol uses for the virtual keyboard.

I am "fairly" confident that you will succeed using the code(s) you have been given here. Try the "DSER" set first, and if it works you don't need any other.

Just FYI, I've got for all options (DSER) the code ending in:

XXX...XXX-RFKQRYA

Do make sure that you have the latest firmware, and a stupid but useful thing, when the scope says: Try again in 12hours, you need to let it run 12 hours, it doesn't have a battery clock to count when is turned-off.
But I have a feeling that we're close  8).

I agree. I downloaded the source and compiled it (on Linux). Works perfectly here.

Just one more potential trap I can think of:
If you enter the code via :SYST:OPT:INST, the dashes must be omitted!
(For manual entry via the encoder knob, I don't think the '-' character is even offered for entry, so no problems there.)

Good luck! As DC1MC said, I think you must be getting close!  ;)
