The Story of the Red Special - The Queen Story Continues
« on: June 23, 2017, 02:47:27 pm »
Some time ago I posted a link to Hackaday that told the story of the 'Deacy' amplifier. Well, now we have the story of the Red Special.

Have fun  :)

Wow, another fascinating story.

I initially thought "what could be interesting or unique about a guitar amp?".  Then I read the amp story and immediately tied it to the unique sound of of the songs I grew up with.  (Queen was my favorite band as a young teen.  I had their albums on vinyl at home and 8 track for family trips.  It was years before I realized the significance of their name -- I now wonder what my parents thought when I mostly listened to Queen and the Rocky Horror soundtrack.)

I didn't think the guitar story could come close, but it was almost as fascinating.  I have a new level of respect for a band that made their own instruments, and worked with their 'flaws' to produce innovative, memorable music.

Opinions will differ here but I put  Brian May at the same level as Clapton and Hendrix. All three of them are Masters of their art

Excellent story! This reminded me that Eddie Van Halen also made his own guitars.

Oh, the "whys" of the datasheets... The information is there not to be an axiomatic truth, but instead each speck of data must be slowly inhaled while carefully performing a deep search inside oneself to find the true metaphysical sense...
