TMS3450 Digital clock on 12VDC?
« on: January 11, 2017, 08:40:43 pm »
Can I use a NE555 to run a TMS3450 (http://pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/86980/TI/TMS3450NL.html) or is there a circuit to give the chip 50Hz and the display CYCLE1 and CYCLE2 that it requires so that I can run it from 12 to 15 Volt DC in 24 hour mode?

I think more than a yes/no answer is required here because both are right.

Yes: it a 555 time could be used to generate the 50Hz clock.

No, bad idea though, as the 555 timer doesn't have sufficient accuracy and stability to give good time keeping. It will continuously run too fast or too slow.

Use a crystal oscillator and divider to generate 50Hz.
