My first guess that is this is screen burn, but it's much more apparent on the right-hand side of the display. I would expect it to be more uniform. I've pretty much no experience with these - is it repairable or does it need to be replaced?

Haven't pulled it apart yet to get a part #.

Digging further to see what else needs doing, I found a battery. But not just any battery!  :wtf:

I removed the white powder (leaking of course). OK, I can understand a two cell stacked battery, but these are obviously different capacities. I think they are Ni-Cad.

Is this custom made? Never seen anything like this...

May have to use an external pack with two cells as clearance to the next board up is very tight.

From the dimension, looks like a CR2020 + CR2040. Funny combination of different mAH. Got to be self made, judging from the poor soldering of the tap.

In which case, might as well be CR2020 + CR2020 of same mAH and save 2mm height.

Oh yes, you are right. This odd looking shape is in-fact NiCad battery, thanks.
