Fluke 179 1.5mA battery current in sleep mode.
« on: July 17, 2018, 05:51:41 pm »
My Fluke 179 has 1.5mA battery current in sleep mode(after 20 min). Is it normal? How can I fix this?

Not normal, I wouldn't think. If it has a backup supercapacitor in there, I would suspect that.

The Original 87's, 85's, 83's ran about 330uA in sleep mode if I recall correctly

The 87III about the same,

The 85III had a bug which I have documented showing an initial 345uA or so, then climbing back up to about 800uA, depending on battery condition.
I confirmed this with a second 85III, and I've heard others with this issue, so it was a definite bug.

The 87V is remarkable at around 35uA in sleep mode.

This means on standby the equipment will consume the battery more faster? To solve this issue the user should remove the batteries?

Thanks

The device does not have a supercapacitor. In the operating mode it seems to work well, the current is about 2 - 2.5 mA, the problem is only in sleep mode. Any ideas?

Perhaps inquire with Fluke. That model should be covered by their lifetime warranty. As I understand it, they don't enforce the thing about being the original owner; I would suggest just saying your boss bought it for you at your old job - no receipt available.

However, make sure you give a REALLY good problem description. If the meter "appears" to work properly on a cursory examination, you are likely to get it
back exactly as you sent it.

That's what happened with my 85III. I sent it back in a second time and they ended up replacing it with an 87V.

I have a 179 at home and a 175 at the office.

I've changed the battery in the 175 at the office maybe three times in the 12 or so years I've had the meter. It gets used on a regular basis and I can't say I'm all that good with turning it off.

I change the battery in the 179 at home yearly and it doesn't get nearly the use as the one at work.

I've never understood why.

To test if the multimeter consume on standby you need tear down the equipment, right?

I took photo's of all stages of sleep to working to OFF. Damn site won't let me post unless I chop them to bits. I have a few so if you want to see a certain stage just ask and I will post that 1 pic on it's own.

Hope this helps,,,,
