« on: October 26, 2016, 01:11:52 am »
Hi guys!

A friend offered me this fluke but have a detail on the screen. That will have repair? It is a serious flaw?

I'm not a lcd expert like Excavatoree or modemhead, but I would say this is not fixable.

Modemhead will likely reply in the next day or two.

I see three problems: 1) varying contrast of the number segments 2) missing bargraph segments and 3) weird oval pattern.

(1) can probably be fixed by cleaning the elastomeric connector (zebra strip).
(2) might be fixed by the connector cleaning, but otherwise is not repairable.
(3) looks like bottom polarizer damage, repairable only by extreme means (peeling the LCD apart, etc.)

Patience.  People live in different time zones, have jobs, responsibilities, etc.  In addition, people are sharing their knowledge with you for free and asking nothing in return, so have some patience.

This is a classic fluke issue. Often fixed by cleaning the rubber flexible contact strips lcd's have.

If that makes sense depends on the cost of the Fluke.
If you get for free
- go for it (in best case you can use it quite long time and you can postpone the repair till the LCD becomes worse)
If you have to pay for the Fluke, it depends on the price to pay
- it may (including the potentially required replacement of the LCD glas) exceed the cost of a better one
I catches at the bay an used Fluke 87 (at least one class better than the 77) in a well condition for less than 90 EUR (including ship cost)
You will learn something new every single day

Is this in general or model specific ? . I have seen quite a few model 77's over the years and none had issues with the elastomer strip. (older 8xxx types yes and quite a few bad LCDs too!).

@ OP have a go at cleaning the strip and PCB contacts anyway , might improve enough not to worry about what does appear to be polarizer issues.
The odd multimeter or 2 or 3 or 4...or........can't remember !.

The missing display you can probably easily fix cleaning the zebra strip but the ring on the around of the display is caused by prolonged exposure to the sun, the polarizer on the screen is burned. I've tried to replace damage like this by replacing the polarizer but I didn't have much success with it... maybe wrong kind of polarizer filter. I've always had a problem with seeing it at the right angle.
