HP 3580A No Trace
« on: October 25, 2023, 03:22:51 am »
I just purchased an HP 3580A that had a working display prior to shipment to me.
However when I tried powering it up after receipt, I get no trace at all.
There are bulbs illuminated on the front panel, so I know it is getting voltage.
Although well packaged by the shipper, I suspect it had a rough transmit, judging by the nice sized hole in the cardboard box.
So:
1. What is the likelihood that the CRT was damaged?
2. What is the possibility of finding a replacement CRT, if it is the CRT?
3. What is the best way to rule out a bad CRT?
Thanks for any and all help!

Check this:
-intensity pot
-internal supply voltages and ripple
-DC voltages at the CRT
-sawtooth deflection voltages at the CRT
-blanking circuit
-trigger circuit

edit: sorry, my bad, I have overlooked you have spectrum analyzer, not a simple scope...  |O

Thanks, but I don't understand.  Could you elaborate, please?

I have to figure out how to safely measure -3KV with my Fluke 8060A now...  :-+

Given the high asking prices for these I would have sent it back, item not as described. Where exactly was the hole in the box, in relation to the 3580A? Guessing at the back (where the CRT socket sticks out), given the controls aren't broken.

Better to go and collect/pick up in person anything with a CRT (especially if it's electrostatic deflection), that way you can see it working (if it was of course) and take better care of transporting it home.

First thing I would check is all internal connections and boards are well seated.
