Help: Anyone have HP 33120A function gen. ROM /firmware
« on: May 13, 2016, 08:53:38 am »
This project has been on backburner for a while.
I am running out of ideas what to check to save this from scrap bin.
Does anyone have ROM image for this or is willing to unsolder the 27c020 eprom to read it?

Borrowed one working 33120A, desoldered the EPROM chip and programmed to new flash. Tried the new flash on my own 33120A, no success. Soldered orginal working flash to borrowed unit, this one gone dead too!
Now both of the meters are equally dead  :scared:

Is the borrowed one still dead if you put back its original ROM? If so, perhaps the bad ROM has a short in it that damaged other components. That'd be a bummer.

HUH..........
Does the now saved firmware burned into a new flash and re installed back to the originally working unit restore it back to functionality ?.
The odd multimeter or 2 or 3 or 4...or........can't remember !.

In this teardown it would seem that the eprom be two am29F010 flash.

In your 33120A is instead only a 27C020?
it is possible that welding the memory back in the working instrument you've shorted a few pin or pin/track?
Good luck.

I think that the chip and functionality is mistakenly identified in those teardown photos. there is a sticker over the firmware chip so I bet it also has 29F010 for user setttings(arb memory) and 27C020 OTP ROM for firmware.

Things get more weird by day: now the borrowed unit (dead after firmware reading attempt) started working...Fix? let it sit on the table over night and it started working :wtf:
Was the memory too hot when we tried it first time? No. it had plenty of time to cool and we tried countless times with no success...

I don't think I made any shorts or dry joints, usually PLCC-32 is reasonably easy piece of cake for me.
