hp 54502a nvram substitute
« on: January 17, 2018, 02:40:48 am »
my old hp1980b is finally dead.  all indications are that the final failure was an unobtainable horizontal ceramic hybrid.  (ok....the guys in the great white north have one pull, but coded as "untested".  it just did not feel worth the risk for a scope that is a high maintenance constant source of irritation........but geeeze I loved it anyway.  may it RIP.)

its replacement is an hp54502a that on arrival was 100% functional and passed all tests, but the date code on the dallas nvram chip was 1991!

the idea of replacing an imbedded lithium battery with another encased battery just seemed wrong.  my solution was a separate battery controller, standard sram, and a coin cell.

hardest part of the project was removing the the old dallas chip with a manual chinese solder sucker.  in the end it surrendered and the board survived intact.

the result is ugly, but it works.  after replacement and re-cal it appears to be a happy unit.

your mileage may vary.
