Sorry if i seemed to have abandoned this project, i just needed a break to sit and think. I got an idea and so i'm back at it, i fed 13 MHZ into the attenuator and it attenuated. Meaning that it just refuses to pick up the oscillation, i'm beginning to doubt my ability  to resurrect this boat anchor  :-//

Is L17 blown?

Where did you feed the attenuator input when you saw it work?

Also did you check the wire continuity?

I probed this point here and got the dialed in frequency.

Doesn't matter.

Did you check the wire that connects L17 to the attenuator for continuity?

Continuity across the inductor but i'm not getting a connection to the tines.

EDIT; there is continuity to the tines.

The thing just sprung to life, it seems all i needed to do to fix it was rule out every possible motive except for old and cranky.  :-DD

Exactly as I suspected, bad wire or solder joint. You poked it and restored continuity.

Jiggle it a little bit, the bad connection is still there.

I've jiggled the coaxial every which way and taken a good long look at the joint on the attenuator probe, all kosher. Then i tweaked the single wind inductor on the thing and it sprung to life, reattached it the sliding mechanism it and it still works.

Excellent news, so you now have a working unit.

Mostly anyway, the percent modulation meter is still screwy but i'm not sure i want to dig into THAT without a tube tester. Time will tell how well it is fixed, i suppose.

Having knocked it around plenty getting it back in the case and onto it's shelf i think it'll keep working. With how much i moved it for it to still work eliminates a short, almost definitely. Fingers crossed.
