JBL Flip 3 identifying components
« on: September 14, 2017, 03:06:20 am »
Can any one help me to identify the components that are located at C801 and C802 of the JBL Flip 3 Bluetooth speaker.
They are located on the usb charge and aux out board. They are located just behind the usb connector.
The picture I attached is from a different board than the one I'm working on. The board I have both of these have been knocked off of the board and lost.

Are they on the USB D+/- pair? If so, they'll be pretty small valued, like 20-100pF. If they are for bypassing some part, 100nf.

The package size of the capacitor is 0402.

I concur with @marshallh.
They are very likely to be filtering caps to reduce RF incursion into the gadget (from the USB cord.)
The gadget is unlikely to be dependent on those caps.
Lack of C801 and C802 just means that it is somewhat more susceptible to RFI.

I think the width looks like 2mm so could be a 2520 MLCC. Better measure it before buying.
Don't know if its worth to buy 2 pcs but I think the connector leads look like bended,
a good consideration to save on postage to buy it together.

Hello all!

In the context of the subject of this thread, I have a JBL Flip 3 with a cracking noise. From my web research this will lead to substituting the full range speakers (? is it also your opinion??).
And here's where I found a problem: where can I get them? These speakers are 1.5'' rated for 8 watts at 4 ohm of impedance (JBL / Harman Part Number is 42-015008-04001).
Can't find any equivalent... Can any one help?

Thanks in advance for reading / replying to my post.
Cheers!

Cracking noise isn't really specific enough to recognize any specific symptom or cause.  Certainly one cause of "crackling" is a damaged speaker (the voice coil rubbing on the magnet).  And the solution would be replacing the driver (speaker).

It is very unlikely that you could find a generic equivalent. That speaker driver is almost certainly fully or semi-custom made for that product.  If you can't find a source of JBL replacement parts, you are probably out of luck. It would be not at all surprised if JBL did not even sell replacement/repair parts for such an inexpensive consumer gadget.  Alas that is the common mode of operation in modern times.

I went to the PartsExpress website and they show four drivers which are 1.5inch diameter and 4 ohms  Whether or not they will fit into the gadget is left as an exercise for the reader.

They are likely esd-protecting varistors, not capacitors. The lack of them shouldn't stop the aux jack from functioning, but static sparks may damage the chip then.

On (the remains of) my Flip4, they are not populated.

Thanks for replying, I will do without them.
First my plan was to replace them with 47µF capacitors (measured from remaining ones that left) but i will change my plan.

I already have soldered a new micro-usb print connector and new leads to the print (without the connectors) and i will mount them into the jbl on the remaining wires.
everything is tested so far.

should be ok

47uF capacitors will look like a short to ground at USB frequencies. If you must install a capacitor, use 15pF or less. That's what "C15" means in "ESD0402V18C15".
