mini female usb 2.0 troubleshoot

I have a usb mic, blue yeti, it uses the mini usb 2.0. So I cut a usb cable at the regular usb side and stuck the other end into the mic to check for continuity on the solder points of the mini usb to te board for all four wires and it read zero. So my question is, would this be the correct way to test a mini usb or was this a pointless endeavor
