New (2nd Hand) Car Radio with Strange LCD Problem
« on: January 14, 2015, 04:44:45 pm »
Hi Guys.
I scored a car radio off a South African Auction Site, for R250.00...
Only after I received the radio (Today) did I realise what a score this indeed was. The Radio itself has built in DVD Player, Bluetooth, GPS, MP3 Player, Movie Player, Clock, Reversing Camera Input, Canbus Interface, etc etc etc and (of course) a Radio.

There was1 problem listed by the seller, that the screen randomly goes off.

I played with the radio a bit, and it is indeed random that the screen goes off,
but it is not predictable. What is even stranger, is that if I put a DVD in, or choose a Mode,
the screen will show "DVD" or whatever in the corner, then will start fading out (or something like that), changing mode, or doing something again, and it does the same again.

Now that I have screwed it into the dash, this problem is almost completely persistant.

Here is a video of what the screen is doing (I remember something else doing this once, but I cannot remember what)

Can anybody throw me some suggestions

That looks like whatever is driving the LCD resetting.  Open it up and look for obvious problems, as well as stuff getting hot. IIRC they have a ribbon that goes to the LCD that gets damaged easily if care is not taken on install.

Maybe a load issue or unwanted feedback?

Check the caps etc first

Pity, it is a lot of SMD Electrolytic caps inside.
Will need to order some before I continue with that.

I did replace the 4700uF cap on the input though. No difference

The strange thing is that if I press the NAV button, that part works the whole time, and I can access the menu, settings, etc. But then when I press the DVD/Radio/Etc buttons, it does the switch over, flashes the text overlay in the top corner, and then does the funny screen thing (most of the time).

But then when it does come right(by itself), it works fine for a long time.

All the connectors were seated fine.

Oh well, what can i expect for that price..

Maybe, you have a bad solder joint somewhere, use a hair drier, freeze spray to locate the problem area/component.
