Repairing a faulty laptop LCD panel
« on: September 03, 2018, 03:43:03 pm »
I know this may sound silly but I would like to try fixing a laptop LCD panel. The panel is extremely rare HV121P01-100. It is so rare that our Chinese friends sells whatever crap instead and put even enormous effort into counterfeiting it.

Mine is genuine which came with the x60t laptop from ebay. However, there is probably a loose contact and the panel is touchy. When I apply pressure on various edges, it works. It even worked most of time in the original x60t laptop. Sometimes, i just needed to knock on the edge.  However, when I removed it from he laptop, it shows horizontal lines and nothing is practically readable.

Similar to this video:

I verified that cable between the LCD and the motherboard is OK. (two laptops, two cables).

Does anyone have experience with debugging such failure? I know that I will need to take it apart, it is risky and chances are low, but I have nothing to lose, except time.

Thanks for any hint.

PS: Picture comes from alibaba and is for illustration only.

This is a problem with the bonds onto the glass or the driver ICs. The tolerances are extremely fine so you won't be able to just remove and reattach, but the application of heat and pressure may (temporarily) fix it.

Hmm, this does not sound very optimistic. What kind of heat and pressure we're talking here about? Would you have a guesstimate?  ::)

If it's that rare and difficult to replace then don't even attempt it, find a specialist, there are companies which make the equipment for reworking those connections and there are repair companies who buy it.

I have no idea how much they charge or if they'd even speak to you but if they're willing then it will be a lot better if they don't have to 'un fix' a bodged up panel.

If they won't speak to you, then have a read of the links below and see if you can work out how to do it.

its not an exact science, most likely you have a fault in the glass part of the display
http://www.amadamiyachi.com/glossary/glossacfbonding

This is how you could attempt to fix it

pretty much nobody (except desperate people in china/india) repairs this. Its like alloy wheels repair, you can do it for a living if you live in Belarus/Russia/India, https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_HZvxzC_PWvRKoFznYOfYw/videos?disable_polymer=1 , but it wont fly in the west.

its $100-200 "rare", so not very much, certainly not enough for rebonding rework people to even reply in English (maybe Chinese)
Who logs in to gdm? Not I, said the duck.
My fireplace is on fire, but in all the wrong places.

To be able to do tab bonds properly, you need a rig like this:

People have successfully build home-brew versions when they have access to a large enough number of panels with defective TAB bonds to make it practical and economic.

It is virtually pointless to attempt to do it manually for a single panel.

If you have a rare and expensive panel made of unobtanium that has bad TAB bonds, simply send it to one of the many repair facilities that has the proper equipment.
