I am attempting to fix a leister triac s [https://www.leister.com/en-nl/plastic-welding/civil-engineering/products/hot-air-hand-tools/triac-s that had a non-funtional control board, which is potted in some sort of silicone making it impossible to troubleshoot. Does anyone have any ideas to regulate a 1600W heating element?

A long time ago I repaired one of these great Leister tools. The potting material was actually of soft polyurethane material and I was able to remove it completely to gain access to the components. Troubleshooting was easy then and if I remember right, it was only a broken SCR that needed to be replaced. At the time I contacted Leister and they also offered the control board as a replacement part. But this was in the USA and a long time ago.

I guesse the potting compound could be polyurathane, all i know is it's soft and rubbery, white, and has a thin red/pink layer where it touches something else [components, wires, ect.].
About getting the board from Leister, my dad sent the whole thing in to get repaired and the repair estimate was just a little less than a new unit. so i think that a new control board is out.

If you send the complete tool to Leister, they will charge a premium price, but replacement parts were reasonable. It takes a lot of time and careful attention, but removing the soft potting material is your only other option. Or you build a new control circuit from scratch.

Thanks for the tip about the replacement parts I'll look into it.

Edit:

found a web page with a breakdown of all the part numbers: http://www.ihshotair.com/triac-s-spare-parts-diagram
