Rigol DS1054z stuck during boot

Hi all,

I tried to turn on my Rigol DS1054z today, but it is just stuck at the boot screen. Have anyone experienced this?
Or even better - does anyone know how to fix it, other than return the scope to Rigol?

I'd try to download FW update into a flash drive and see what happens. Other than this, return may be the only option.

I have just tried that. Put the firmware file on a USB-stick. Insert the stick in the front of the scope and turn it on.
When I turn on the scope, it gives a beep, but thats all.

Ohh crap!!

Ok, its fixed now. I inserted the USB-stick, and during power-on I repeatedly pressed the "Help" button on the scope. The scope booted and asked if I wanted to update the firmware. I pressed "Cancel" and the scope is now working again.

There is a key you can press during boot that resets the scope.
Third blue key from the bottom on the left side iirc. It will revert to Chinese, but the language menu should be visible.

It's the 5th dark grey key down on the left side during boot repeatedly until the full scope display comes up.
To change the language select the 3rd dark grey button on the right.

So you fixed it by having a firmware .gel file on a USB stick, putting the stick in the slot, turning on, and pressing the 'Help' button repeatedly during bootup.... right?

So that's another method to add to the Rigol toolkit, thanks!

Yes it's a different bug.
I'm not sure if the USB stick is really necessary or if I could just have pressed the 'Help' button. But to answer your question, yes, that was the procedure I was using.
1. Insert USB stick with firmware file in the scope
2. Turn on scope and pres 'Help' button repeatedly while the scope is booting
(3. In my case the firmware on the USB stick was the same as the one installed on my scope, so I pressed 'Cancel' when the scope asked if I wanted to update)

As I mentioned earlier, the "factory reset" didn't work.

after working for a long while with my DS1054Z (recently updated to fw 4.4.1.1 and calibrated), I thought: now it's warm, why not re-calibrate it?
It did it with success, then I power cycled it and... it hung. All lights are on, the screen remains black.
I tried all the tricks explained in this thread and all possible combinations... nothing worked.
Is the device blown, or is there any hope? Any idea/suggestions to repair it?

Try unplugging all the probes and other things plugged into it.
Twiddle all the knobs and change the state of the latching push-buttons.
Don't connect it to LAN/USB.
Then pull the AC power itself for about 5 minutes and then see if it will power on having eliminated all the physical / electrical variables possible.
If that doesn't work ... I SEEM to remember someone mentioning some magic key sequence to get the thing to stop in a boot loader mode or something that could be required to reflash it if it locks up later on in the startup process.

It may also be able to take new FW via some procedure that is built into its updater / loader via USB / network or something but I don't know the details.

And just a final thought, is it possible that the display is not working (check the brightness control and such?) and the scope is actually working except for your ability to see anything?  See if any of the buttons / knobs affect the display or LEDs in any way suggesting that it may be alive when it is in the locked up state.

Otherwise I'd say either repair it by service or see what you can do to reset / reload it by something like JTAG.

This week the same happened with my DS1054z. I purchased it late December 2016, used it a bit then didnt turn it on for about 1.5 months. This week I turned it on and
got the locked Rigol intro screen. If my attempt at posting image attachments works, the first image ds1054z_lockup_1.jpg shows the initial screen. ds1054z_lockup_2 shows the locked screen after continually pressing "help" at power on. And after continually pressing the 5th grey button down left side ds1054z_aft_lock.jpg. Good thing is the 5th grey button got my scope up and running again. Thank you all above for the pointers.

firmware: 00.04.04 (stock)
