Samsung HDD HD204UI logic board - TVS diode blown
« on: December 03, 2016, 12:49:56 pm »
Hi,

On my Samsung HDD - HD204UI - 2TB - the TVS diode on the top left (circled in light green) cracked, let out the magic smoke, and went short circuit on me.

The 0 ohm resistor next to it went open circuit.
The other TVS diode next to it on the right is not short circuited.

What I've tried:

I desoldered the TVS diode and left it open circuit (yes, no protection)
I desoldered the 0 ohm resistor and replaced with a blob of solder

Now when I try it, the hard drive tries to power up, I can hear a "whirr" for about 5 seconds then stops, then tries again for about 5 seconds with the "whirr" and it keeps looping like this.

Tried a different known working power supply - same result.

I'm running out of ideas - anyone can offer some suggestions?

Additional info:

The TVS diodes - the left says "ON pA01 LG" the right says "6V8A". Not sure which is 12V which is 5V, but I'm deducing from the identifiers the one on the left is the 12V.

I've been using this as a guide: http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/HDD/TVS_diode_FAQ.html

Quiet likely motor driver IC was damaged because of overvoltage too as it is directly powered, without any regulators in between. Therefore while heads move ("whirr") while trying read the plates, motor does not spin-up.

You will need hot air gun to replace it, as center pad is soldered to the PCB.
