Sceptre X20WG Naga II
« on: July 29, 2015, 10:17:24 pm »
Howdy folks,

I have a little bit of a question here. I got an old monitor from a buddy of mine at work. It wasn't working, so I said I'll take a look at it. He just wanted to get rid of it so I took it.

I suspected bad caps, considering that it is a now 8 year old monitor (Board fabricated 07/26/2007). I was right, unfortunately, that is not the only issue.

A chip on the back has essentially bust its seams.

I have photos of it all here:

The first two show most of the bad caps, and the last one is the busted chip.

I have no idea what it is.
The logo looks like the fantastic 4 logo except it is an 'A'.
The numbers beside it are 4605
The bottom numbers are BB7171.

There is a second one that is not busted that I can provide a photo of if needed.

My question is that the monitor does work -for a second anyways that is-. The LED and buttons on the front work fine. The monitor works for a second then shuts off.

Is it worth trying to repair it without knowing if I can replace the chip? Is it possible (Since it has both DVI and VGA) that it may only drive one of the display outputs and it might work fine if using the other one?

The replacement caps will cost ~$13 USD to get.

What do you guys think?

NOTE- Working on a way of displaying the photos. Too big for the server apparently.

EDIT- Pictures can be found at http://imgur.com/a/Sv3th#2
While not in the same order, I think you guys are smart enough to figure out what is what. :P

1) Samxon GF are a "known" bad series.  They normally bloat, but not always.  They can have high ESR with any physical signs of distress.

2) It looks like an AO4606, not 4605 as you write.  If correct, there is tons of info on this over at badcaps.net.  Datasheet for AO4606 is at your usual favourite places.

3) Over at badcaps.net, I wrote a 2 seconds to black troubleshooting guide (start with post #19).  A failed mosfet would contribute to that.

Thanks, seems like you're right. The replacement kit replaces all the caps besides the main, which is made by United Chemi-Con, so not too worried about it. A new mosfet doesn't seem to be too expensive. Quick question, are the bottom numbers of much significance in purchasing a replacement or just the AO4606 (Yes, 4605 was a typo, my bad)?

I am by no means an expert on much anything. I'm just interested in electronics and trying to fix them keep my mind running.

Thanks for the help, knew I would get somewhere here. I'll be sure to check out your guide.

EDIT-Confirmed that all I need is the AO4606, purchasing from EBay today. As well as that I will be getting the replacement capacitor kit.

Seems like I might be getting a $15 20.1" monitor.

Thanks for all your help and I'll be sure to follow your instructions.

Datasheet explains the codes.

I found what I was looking for, but it seems to be in the document labelled "Marketing Description" and not in the datasheet itself. Strange they don't have it in there. At least I have what I need.

The datasheet (attached) does have it.
