Simple PCB lifted pad question
« on: May 09, 2017, 12:24:28 am »
Hi everyone

Very new to all this and not so electronic savvy so please forgive if this is a silly/obvious question.

Was trying to replace a relay and some caps without proper desoldering tools (very silly) and managed to lift off some pads.  The PCB came out of a mini fridge that I was wanting to repair (the starter relay and compressor are okay :D).  I ended up buying a proper desoldering gun and got everything apart without more damage.

Anyway,

There are 2 PCBs stacked on top of each other, held together by soldered legs/pins, circled in red here:

The pad that lifted was one of the set of legs/pins, as pictured here:

My question is, was the lifted pad attached to anything pertinent?  From my inexperienced eyes, I don't see it being connected to anything obvious? unless the dark green areas mean something...
-if it was connected to something pertinent, how should I proceed in fixing the pad?

Dark green areas are actual conductors. It is not a lifted pad, it is a part of the track ripped off. Easy fix - just scrape a bit of solder mask and solder the pin to the open area.

You don't even need to scrape off the mask, there are already some exposed areas there, as well as a nearby pad on the same trace.

Hello

Do you mean just solder the 2 pins/legs where the ripped off track here to any of the existing pads where the dark green areas are?  Such as the lines in purple that I drew or where the hole where the "R9" is?

Yes, use those openings in the solder mask as contact points.
