Sony C1 PictureBook PCG-C1VFK
« on: January 01, 2017, 02:14:10 am »
Hello everyone, as this is my first post! :) I am a mechanical engineering student from Germany who has been following the EEVBlog on YouTube at least since 2011.

Recently I came across a neat little Sony C1 PictureBook, its model name is PCG-C1VFK. It was probably built in 2001. Sadly it does not work. Most likely the cause is that the Ni-MH battery leaked and caused corrosion on the motherboard.

For now my main problem is some of the screws. They have some kind kind of Philips head, but with five ends instead of four. They idea seems to be a bit like the Pentalobe that Apple uses, but I am quite sure that a Pentalobe screwdriver would not fit, because its ends are to thick. I am mainly posting this here, because I hope that there is someone out there who has already worked on these machines and knows what screwdriver is needed :)

For now I have ordered some Torx TR security bits from amazon. At least the look a bit like they could fit, but I still doubt it.

Thanks for any helpful comments on this topic! :)

In the meantime I managed to take a picture of one of these screws:

Does anyone recognize that screwhead? Or could you imagine, that this might be some tamper resistant torx screw? I ordered that set from amazon, but the smallest in it is  TR8, which still is way to big. There are smaller sizes, but the seem to be quite hard to come by.

Looks like a pentaglobe to me (and these come in a few different sizes btw)
There's 0.8/1.2/1.5/2.0. Anyhow, I'd suggest you get the following screwdriver kit (which contains all of em):

Thanks for your reply! I am quite sure it is not a pentalobe, since this type of screw was introduced by apple in 2009 and my notebook is from 2001.

I managed to get the screws out with a small flathead screwdriver.

Sadly, I think the notebook is beyond economical repair. The battery acid has already done huge amounts of damage :'(

Usually its look horrible initially, but you can still clean it to try a rescue.

First remove the old battery and use a vacuum cleaner with a toothbrush to clear away all loose debris.
Then dipped tooth brush into white vinegar and brush all the contacts and parts. Continue these until all parts are clean. Use water and cloth to wipe surfaces after.
Then use a fine sand paper to lightly go through the contacts.
After use WD40 contact cleaner. Spray all the contacts again.

Send before and after photo of your rescue operation.

Lastly if all else failed, find possible cheap replacement parts to replace contacts.

Edit: BTW, what battery is that? Lithium-ion????
