Hello EEV community! I am currently new to the forum and I am desperately in need of help.

This will be my second time repairing another Walkman but for some reason, I can't figure out on how to open the back plate. I was able to remove the front part. I did, however, remove all the screw...and the only problem is the volume knob. I am guessing the volume knob is removable since the only thing holding the back plate is the knob, but for some reason no matter how hard I pull it just wouldn’t come off. All I can assume there must be a hidden screw in that knob, but I couldn’t even remove the small cap. I put all the screw back on and tried to remove the knob again, but the result is the same. I could use a flat head screwdriver to just yank it off, but I don’t want to damage it without knowing it might have a hidden screw or what’s under it.

I need to open it, so I can clean the corrosion in the battery compartment and add a thin metal plate to the negative side and most likely change the belt, and add a red LED since it’s missing. Hopefully, I could hear the motor running or make a sound, so I know it powers on. If it doesn’t I would I would need everyone advise on how to fix the power issue. I do believe there used to be a thin metal stick that sticks out of the negative side terminal of the battery compartment to make contact to the 3 small pin when the battery is pressed in, because when I was little I broke the small metal stick when removing a battery and I added a foil to power it on. This isn't my original walkman sadly.... So, if anyone has open a Sony Walkman wm-10 before how did you do it? Even those who haven't, please I need your help too.

Hi, and welcome.

Some info here:

That volume knob can be removed by unscrewing the cap in the middle with the two holes in it. Its a screw cap.
You will need some kind of two pin tool, or something home made.

That type of screw cover is sometimes called a "spade" or "spanner" recess. Some bits for them are typical in universal bit sets.
However, many times the cover is a different span and the bits won't fit.
You can use a camera lens opening tool to turn it: http://amazon.com/Neewer-Professional-Spanner-Repairing-Stainless/dp/B00J5F73GA/
Or circlip pliers: http://www.knipex.com/index.php?id=1216&L=1&page=group_detail&parentID=1365&groupID=1455

Finding information on the internet is like finding a needle in a haystack, many thanks, voltz.

So that's what the cover is called! I remember seeing my dad use those tool sadly I don't have them but luckily I have many at my disposal.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Now I finally got it open but it suffered allot of damage. It wouldn't want to power on so I attempt to clean the battery acid using hydrogen peroxide. As you can see the battery acid got absorbed into the board and crystalize causing allot of problem. I finally replace the belt, removing the oozing old belt and clean the spools. It was a bit risky but I have seen my grandpa fix many corroded boards when I was a young boy. I do believe I need to sand it down. Also, the white wire was corroded so badly it just popped off which made me scream. Just because I know soldering it back would be a pain. It took me hours to cut the wire and solder it carefully.

It finally powers on! Sadly this cassette player is picky about which cassette it would play. Any new cassette taps from 2017 just wouldn't want to play and I don't know why. It only likes to play cassettes from the 80's, mainly the sony LNX and UX-ES cassette taps. And then it started to slow down or play too fast for some odd reason... it was running well for a while. I thought it might be the leftover residue under the spool so I attempt to clean that but I can't remove the spool since the negative battery compartment was corroded shut causing it to stick to the frame. Now it doesn't want to power on from some odd reason later on it powers back on but struggle to power itself. The LED light slowly struggles to light up. Once I give it a few second powering on it started to run smooth. It might be the belt but it doesn't seem to get stuck on anything.

It could be the white wire solder on to the positive battery compartment because I remember it popped of many times when I try to power the player on. Each time it wasn't connected it wouldn't power the player. I did solder well enough for it to stick. I might have to resolder it again....

If this cassette deck has the sensor fingers to detect the cassette type (I, II, III, IV) then it may be switching amplification/attenuation with damaged components. That would explain playing some tapes but not others.
