Tektronix 575 CRT Adjustment Collar
« on: December 29, 2015, 07:18:31 pm »
Tektronix 575 CRT Adjustment Collar
The Adjustment Collar is deteriorating and I am wondering if spare parts are available or if there is another method for replacing this piece?
As you can see by the pics I believe it is disintegrating.
This is my backup machine I bought for parts but I got it out today and thought why not do a little cleanup and adjusting.

I wasn't sure if someone used a liquid adhesive or if this was the plastic deteriorating from heat and age.

I just looked at mine (photos below), and it appears to be a slotted collar made of something rubber-like to permit the rotation collar to grip the CRT without damaging it.  Mine seems to have some chunks missing too, though it isn't failing nearly as badly as your backup unit is.  It looks to be about 1/16" thick, and if I were to replace it and had to make something, I'd suggest getting some sheet rubber (something like santoprene, perhaps - it's good for up to 275 degrees F) from someplace like McMaster-Carr (a 1/16" x 3" x 36" sheet, their p/n 86215K52, is $10.10).  Cut an appropriately sized strip from that and wrap it around the neck, then clamp it in place with the collar.

FWIW.

If it jams, force it.  If it breaks, you needed a new one anyway...

Thanks for the info.
When I bought my first 575 it was quite perfect and had the extra voltage Mod and an excellent CRT.
Bright easily focused.
So I thought maybe I should pick up another unit for extra parts.
I was worried about how many of these were going to be left !

Now you can find them on Craigslist for 25-50 dollars!

Where are you located that you see a 575 for $50?
The day Al Gore was born there were 7,000 polar bears on Earth.
Today, only 26,000 remain.

Yeah, huh?  I managed to snag my mod 122C last year for $150 from eBay, but I believe it was that low only because it was advertised as local pickup only and hadn't sold through at least one previous listing cycle.  I wound up driving about an hour and 45 minutes each way to get it.

Yes,  I re-read my post and those Craiglist prices for Tek 575 should have been 125-150.
I was thinking of the 7000 series scope mainframes at my local Hamfest in October going for 25-50.
Area is Melbourne and Jacksonville.
My last Tek 575 purchase on eBay was 75 and 85 shipping.
And yes I will drive 1-1/2 hours for Tek equipment also!

Prices here are usually twice that at least. This is for example an outstanding offer: http://www.watchcount.com/?cc=DE&uqsrc=plbm&uqkw=231792999361&uqcat=#serp
All seven units sold in <1 hour, all seven units to the same guy, 200 € ea.

I just restored a 575 that needs one of these. I've been to your forum but it's all in German and I don't know who to ask. Can you direct me how to get in touch with this person?

I think I would have noticed a problem in such a mundane part in my 575, will have a look. it's just a clamp. Hopefully it rot welded in place over time, trace is level.

Makes me think of trace rot controls  :-DD

It's not a clamp. It's the slip ring under the clamp, and it crumbles into dust when touched. It's not a show stopper but it does make the crt rotation fiddly and unstable. Currently I'm using neoprene weatherstripping.

common failure of  old Tek equpiment.
It was  rubber.

I have a a good rubber. I have making a replica based this good rubber.   But i don't found  casting mould, sadly also good rubber :palm: .

A quick & dirty solution:  Pick CRT out and  you add smooth & hard tape and put again into  Tek instruments.
How much tape ? Minor clearance  is ok.

Regards
matt
