What kind of resistor is this?
« on: July 20, 2014, 03:44:48 am »
I'm fixing a TV and I noticed a couple of these 10? (5%) resistors blew up. I'm trying to order replacements on Digikey but I'm not sure what type they are. Based on a few Google searches I'd guess they're metal oxide film resistors, but I could be wrong. I'd appreciate some education. Thanks!

I think those are just metal oxide film ones, that or some high temp ones  :-//

looks like 100 ohms to me.

brown black silver would be 1 ohm, brown black gold gold would be 10 ohms, 5%

Green is often for flameproof resistors, but the colors aren't really standardized. A regular power resistor should do. I'd offer an opinion as to the power rating, but I really can't tell what size those are :P

brown-black-black-gold is definitely 10 ohms, not 100...
1 0 (100), 10%

looks like 100 ohms to me.

brown black silver would be 1 ohm, brown black gold gold would be 10 ohms, 5%
Brown black silver is 1 0 (10-2), or 0.1 ohm, assuming you left off a gold tolerance band there.
(If not, then it's 1 (100), or 1 ohm, and 10%. Three-stripe resistors are quite uncommon though.)
Brown black gold is 1 0 (10-1), or 1 ohm, 5%.

But from the picture, I'm not so sure that's brown. Red, giving 20 ohms, would also be possible. Damn colors are always funny, and the camera probably doesn't help either...

Hi,

It could be a fusible resistor, do not replace it with a "normal" one.

Good point, especially considering it did "fuse".

yeah you're right. 10 ohms.

that explains why it blew up like that. 100 ohms would need a lot more volts, more than what is available in most of those crt circuits.

Here's a photo to help with sizing... I should also add that they read as open with a multimeter. Does this new information help with determining the resistor type and/or any other specs?

It seems quite likely to be a fusible, considering the low value, the fact that it blew cleanly open, and the fact that they're common in TV circuits. 2W, maybe? 3W? Probably not more.

Here's a 3W that would probably be suitable: FKN3WSJT-73-10R

It might be tempting to oversize, as we're not completely sure of the power rating - but it is best not to go too big, or it'll take more current than designed to fuse it. I'd stick to 2W or 3W.

Check the rest of the circuit, what caused the resistor to blow may be still present.

It looks like a metal oxide flame proof resistor to me.  The ones I normally buy are light powdery blue.

They could  be inductors, not resistors

Thanks, everyone. I ordered a couple different kinds so hopefully at least one will work!
