Yamaha RV-V367 protection mode

Hi!

I have an 8 year old RX-V367 that has started going into protection mode. Currently the symptoms will be unable to power on at all, but after a flick of the switch at the wall point, it will allow another three tries before going back into that state again.

The last few codes in the protection history logs all show PS1 100L, indicating the lower limit of the protection function being exceeded. Now, I'm somewhat new to this type of troubleshooting but have yet to test regulators, but wanted to see if anyone here has seen this behaviour before on the Yamaha receivers before I dive in.

It has gradually become worse since first exhibiting the behaviour, usually apparent in the morning after sitting in an off state overnight. To get the receiver functioning again, if I trigger the protection circuit around 3 times or so (as in, resetting the protection and trying again another 3 times), it will eventually stay on at some point and will stay on and function without any issues.

I've had a quick look inside and all of the electrolytic look OK except one 10000uF/16V (C1320 I believe?) which has hint of a bulge but no leakage.

Any tips appreciated! I will go ahead and test all of the regulators soon but please chime in with anything else I should do. I don't have a scope unfortunately but have a RMS DMM handy. Thanks!

If C1320 is ever so slightly bulge, then the ESR would be greater than 0.02ohms at 100KHz.
Most likely, that would be the only problem with the set.  ;)

Does anyone know what protection mode 098L is. I have no idea, but when ever the input is switched to HDMI and there is a input and output connected it will go into protection mode and switch off.

I’ve done a factory reset, but that hasn’t helped.

I have the exact same problem with HDMI inputs and I'm getting codes, 096L 097L 098L 099L 100L, with a Roku on any HDMI port. The problem was intermittent for a month, or so. Now the S/PDIF input is gone while the receiver will function with RCA inputs, as long as I avoid selecting any HDMI connected input. 

With inspection, Capacitors C1320 (10000uf 16v) & C1317 (4700uf 16v) have a small bulge.  Parts on order...

The self-diagnostics are in the service manual.

The error codes usually read something like PS PRT 82L , DCPRT XXX(some number or other) or something like that. The manual will give a "normal" range. Anything outside that range will trigger the protect function.

The numbers represent a voltage seen by the microprocessor. Unfortunately, they do not give you the actual voltage, but rather something like this:

The uProc B+ voltage divided by 255, the result multiplied by the error code seen.

In this case 3.3V / 255 = 0.0129411764705882  x 82 = 1.061176470588235

So you would expect approximately 1.06 volts at the PS_PRT pin on the microprocessor.

The nice thing is, you don't need to go to the microprocessor itself (risking shorting pins, etc) for your reading.

Thanks druu for posting the info. I just picked up an RX-V367 that most of the time wouldn't turn on. Diagnostics mode came up with  a "PS1 100L"code.  Sure enough, Capacitor C1320 was bulged, and in diagnostics mode, it was sitting at around 7 Vdc instead of 8 Vdc. The display was also a little dim in diagnostics more, and flickered at times. I replaced C1320, and it fired up and has been working ever since.

Now to get back to that RX-V1600 on the back bench that still doesn't want to turn on!

Hy guys, my problem is decoder off, no sound,The 1320 was bulgde, change the 10000uf (1320) capacitor, problem remain change also the 4700 (13 18) and 2200 (1319) but no change. I see a picture on this tread but my rx don't have the 4700 16v (1317) capacitor. Any Idee what I chould change next?
