APC UPS 1400 reardown
« on: April 24, 2017, 08:51:46 pm »
I am doing some cleaning in my storage and I decided it is time for it to go since it is dead for more than 5 years (it used to power my reef aquarium)

It seems nice, even after so many years. Although, there is some liquid stain in the battery chamber (probably happened before I bought it second hand. I got it without a battery and installed a new one)

And the second questionable thing is that the mains wiring at the back is exposed, and seems just soldered with a minimal amount of "stuff"

For anyone wondering what it looks like from the inside, here is some porn

PS
I will keep it for a couple of days to see if I should salvage any parts, so feel free to ask for a close-up photo of something if you see something interesting.

If the unit is completely dead, they can be a really nice source for parts. A lot of nice MOSFETs (the ones that actually still work)

From my experience, though, these can be really tough to kill. Unless one of the APC ASICs are toast, most of the issues can be easily repaired. I had one unit that didn't want to power up at all. It looked really bad, but all I had to do was replace a relay. It was the main relay, that connected the live and neutral to the rest of the unit.

I think I got a few of these boards somewhere in a pile with PCBs.
There are small lies, big lies and then there is what is on the screen of your oscilloscope.
