Colophonium bottle panelling - needs attention?
« on: January 04, 2018, 06:04:57 pm »
I bought a bottle of colophonium (from Interflux, ROL0), it hasn't been used and is nearly entirely full. It's not been used yet. Now I noticed that the bottle has panelled on three sides, either because the plastic is allowing some gas to pass through the plastic of the bottle or because the colophonium reacts with the oxygen that's remaining under the cap. Considering how little there can be under the cap, I'd say some component of the colophonium is gassing through the plastic.

Do I need to worry about what's coming out (as in reacting with other materials in the closet)? Would it be better to rebottle colophonium in glass bottles, also because this would increase shelf life?

FYI, colophonium is called “rosin” in contemporary English, at least in the contexts of electronics, music, cooking, and sports. (In English, colophonium is considered an archaic word for it. Most people won’t know it. I only do because of German.)

Rosin doesn’t evaporate. (Give it enough time and it becomes amber, remember?) So it is necessarily the solvents that are escaping. I guess a better bottle wouldn’t hurt. Glass would work, but my flux came in HDPE bottles, and it’s fine several years later. Same with IPA stored in that.

Thanks! I'll hunt for a more suitable bottle then before I have to use solid flux  :)
