What crimper do i need?
« on: February 18, 2013, 10:23:49 am »
What crimper is needed for the below?

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300849829529

Searching ebay for a crimper for non-insulated terminals throws up a lot but they seem to be for bigger terminals. This one looks like it may be correct? I'm basing that on the AWG range, i don't know if there is different types of terminals

I found something like this, it's used to do headers in computers..so if they are around the same size as a PC fan header then you will be alright.....to bet honest I use pliers at work.. we don't do a lot of them

This one is a little pricey but probably worth it if you plan to use it quite a bit.

I've tried all types, but the BEST I ever used were these - global.rakuten.com/en/store/monju/item/800-pa-21/
PA21 / PA09 (smaller). That store may look sus, but I've bought a couple times from them .. FAST and NO hassles at all.
They have MUCH cheaper prices than Amazon etc
Hello <tap> <tap> .. is this thing on?

I actually just went though finding the a good small crimp pin crimper that doesn't cost an outrageous amount of money.  It's kind of amazing how much you can spend on a simple hand tool with some slots cut in the end of it.

This is what I came up with.  (Just the part number, not necessarily buying it from digikey)
http://www.digikey.com/product-search/en?x=0&y=0&lang=en&site=us&KeyWords=63811-1000

It's a real Molex, so you are probably not going to find melted army men in the metal.  It's also got pretty much every range you would need in one tool, except for the REALLY small crimp pins.  Sparkfun has a tool for the REALLY small pins if you need that.  That same Molex part is available from multiple distributors for prices ranging from 29USD to 45USD.  I'm not sure how hard it would be to get in various countries, but here is the findchips search:
http://www.findchips.com/avail?part=63811-1000

I've been using mine for a couple weeks.  It makes good crimps.

Wow that molex one gets expensive when looking at a distributor here!

I'm only looking for it for a small scale run of cables and then to have 'just in case' so i've no need to spend above and beyond what i need.

I think i found a suitable one cheap on ebay so i'll give it a go

Thanks

I don't recall where I bought mine, but indeed, the PA-21 and PA-9 are great. The next significant step up would be the manufacturer's supplied racheted tool specific to the exact crimp you are using. (But those are typically several 100's each...)
