Feedback on Craftoptics or other glass-mounted loupes?
« on: May 29, 2018, 09:12:20 pm »
I need all the help I can to do fine soldering work and I have settled on my reading glasses + a pair of Donegan Optivisors (1.5x for work and 2.5x for inspection). While these are great, I do get eye strain after a while (maybe due to optical center alignment - possibly just eyes getting tired).

Does anybody have experience with the dentist-style glass-mounted loupes? I see a bunch of offerings on the web and found a couple of people recommending Craftoptics as an economical alternative to the pro-grade stuff the dentists use.

I did find one post on the Craftoptics: https://www.eevblog.com/forum/reviews/safety-glasses-suggestion/msg330478/#msg330478

I bought a set of these https://www.amazon.com/Surgical-Binocular-Loupes-HeadLight-Aluminum/dp/B00HEVYELO and I prefer the Donnegan visors.  Be aware that the little lights attached are a pain to use and just add weight.
I purchased the cheapest Donnegan with glass lenses and some replacement glass lenses in different powers; I don't know why there is such a price spread on Amazon for them.  I find it is easier to get the Donnegan visor in focus.
The cheap telescope ones you listed have a lot of drawbacks.  They usually don't have individual focus like most binoculars if your eyes aren't the same.  They are hard to bring both lenses to focus for true 3D vision.  Anything over 3.5x will lessen the focal distance and the field of view.  The true medical ones that cost $500 plus are usually made to order for your eyes, preferred working distance and power.  Last time I was at the dentist's office I asked to look through some good ones and the difference is astonishing even though they weren't set for my eyes.  The working distance was about 500mm and the field of view far greater than the cheap ones.  It is like the difference between a $20 set of binoculars and a $400 set.
